Benjamin Mays earns possition of President at Morehouse College.
Benjamin Mays was very important to civil rights before and after the Civil Rights Movement. Similar to Martin Luther Kind Jr. he used peaceful protesting and actually was a mentor to MLK. -
White Primary Declared Unconstitutional in Georgia.
During the King v. Champman case, the Supreme Court declared the white primaries unconstituional. The white primaries in Georgia were where only white democrats could vote in the primary. Because the democrats were the only political party in Georgia at the time, whoever was the representative for the democrats became governor. Since black people weren't allowed to vote on primaries, they couldn't elect their governor, so when this ended African Americans gained a say in who became governor. -
Herman Talmadge becomes Georgia Governor

Schools become desegregated.
Due to the Brown v. Board of Education case, the Supreme Court ruled that schools were seperate, but unequal. This goes agianst the Plessy v. Ferguson case were segregation was allowed because serperate and equal wasnt agianst the Constitution, but since the schools were unequal, this did and schools became desegregated. -
Montgomery Bus Boycott
When Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat for a White man, she was arrested. This started the Montgomery Bus Boycott where black people would not ride the buses. Georgia State Flag changes
To the left of the flag you see Georgia's motto, "Wisdom, Justice, and Moderation", and to the right of the flag is the confederate symbol, to symbolize the growing dislike of desegregation and the refusal to accept it. -
Sibley Comission
Governor Vandiver supported desegregation, but it would be political suicide to say that, so instead he created a team to do research to figure out what the people supported. A man on this research team named John Sibley found out taht 60% of people would rather close down the schools than desegregate. -
First day at UGA.
Even though Hamilton Holmes and Charlayne Hunter met all the qualifications to be accepted into UGA, they were declined because of their color. After being declined the two took UGA to court and won desegregating UGA. Both of them arrived for their first day on January 9, 1961. -
Albany Movement
SNCC (Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee) was an important civil rights group, primarily made up of college students. They used peaceful protests, and organized many things such as sit ins, freedom rides and rallies. The Albany Movement was a rallie that fought agianst segregation. March on Washington
250,000 people gather in Washington, for a peaceful protest, to speak out towards civil rights. Civil Rights Act of 1964
This act forbade discrimination due to race or sex in hiring, promoting or firing. After this, the EEOC was created (Equal Employment Opportunity Commity). -
Lester Maddox becomes Governor or Georgia
Lester Maddox was the last governor to really support segregation. Surprisingly, even though he supported segregation he gave more African American's jobs than any other governor. Staying true to his beliefs in segregation, when he opened up his restaurant, the Pickrick Cafeteria, he had it segregated. This restaurant became very popular because he used the newspaper to publicise it. Though this restaurant faced many problems with the rising belief in desegregation. https://www.youtube.com/watch -
Olympic Games, in Atlanta, Georgia
Andrew Yound was an important member of the Civil Rights Movement. In 1981 he was elected Mayor of Atlanta. As Mayor he helped the city grow and was crucial in bringing the Olympics to Georgia. Also important to bringing about t he Olympics in Atlanta was Maynard Jackson, who became the first black Mayor of a major southern city.
