    Spain
    • GOD: They wanted to convert the Mississppian Indians to catholicism with Missions.
    • GLORY: Spain hoped starting missions and claiming land would make them a stronger power in the world.
    • GOLD: The missions and explorers like Hernando de Soto helped bring gold to Spain.

    Hernando de Soto

    Hernando de Soto
    • Hernando de Soto was an explorer from Spain and the first to explore what is now the southern eastern US, including Georgia in 1539.
    • He came to southern eastern US for the three G's, god, Glory, and Gold.
    • He was the one that encountered the Mississippian Indians.
    • Most of the Indians treated de Soto as a god and he killed the ones that didn't.
    • De Soto and his men spread disease to the Indians.
    • De Soto died in 1542 on his voyage but his men covered it up and kept going.

    France
    • After the failure of the Spanish Missions, France began to explore Georgia as well.
    • France's main interest was the fur trade. Specifically, trading fur from beaver, deer, and samll mammals, with the Native Americans.
    • Many protestamts from France came to Georgia and South Carolina. Protestants are Christians that broke-off from the catholic churches to form new Churches like Baptists, Methodists, and Anglicans.
    • France was never able to start colonies with Georgia.

    • After de Soto's death in 1542, both spain and France started exploring what is now Georgia.
    • Both countries tried to establish colonies there, but failed. However, Sapin did successfully established missions from 1568-1684.
    • Missions were Catholic Churches that were set up to convert the Natives Americans to Christianityso they could become apart of the Spanish economy.
    • The most successful missions were located on the Barrier Islands.
  • Malcontents

    Malcontents
    • Colonists that oaid their own way into Georgia and were unhappy with the laws banning slavery and liqour placed by the trustees and Oglethorpe.
    • Because of the Malcontents' complaints, the ban on slvery and liqour was lifted, forever changing Georgia history.

    James Oglethorpe
    • England gave James Oglethorpe and 20 trustees permission to establish Georgia as a colony in 1733.
    • Oglrthorpe quickly became leader amongst the trustees because friended Native Americans like Tomochichi and Mary Musgrove. He allowed Jews, Scottish and German immagrants to settle in Georgia.
    • Oglethorpe helped establish Savannah and defended Georgia from three Spanish attacks.
    • Oglethorpe left Georgia in 1743 never to return, but he lived long enough to see the colony he helped create.

    Colony of Georgia (charity, economy, and defense)
    • Charity- Georgia was a colony for "worthy poor." This meant that since England gave these poor citizens land if in the colony, they could not drink (hard liqour) or own slaves.
    • Economy- because of English mercantilism, colonists were forced to plant crops like tobacco and Mulberry trees for dilk worms to feed on.
    • Defense- Georgia was very successful at repelling Spanish attacks from Florida. Despite many attempts at destroying the colony, Spain was never successful.
  • Mississippian Indians

    Mississippian Indians
    • They were the most advanced native civilization.
    • They lived in "mound towns" and were responsible for spreading advanced mounds throughout the southeast and Georgia.
    • They lived in tribes called "chiefdoms".
    • They traded with other tribes in the area.
    • They were the first natives to meet the Europeans. Unfortunately, shortly after this most of them died from battle, starvation, and diseases.
