German Expansion

  • The meeting

    Hitler met with military advisers from Austria and Czechoslovakia. The adviser of Czechoslovakia wanted to avoid having a war, but Hitler wanted to use force.
  • Union started

    Hitler wanted to create a union with Austria. Majority of Austria's population were Germans and they wanted unification with Germany. March 12, 1938 German troops marched into Austria, and a day later, Germany announced that their Union with Austria was complete. Hitler then turned to Czechoslovakia. He charged that the Germans there were being abused. France and Britain promised to protect Czechoslovakia.
  • Peace between the countries

    September 30, 1938, Edouard (France), Neville Chamberlain (Britain), and Hitler signed the Munich agreement. Chamberlain returned back to Britain and said they were going to be in peace with Germany.
  • German protection

    March 5, 1939, Germans poured into Czechoslovakia. In the spring of 1939, Hitler charged that the Germans in Poland were being mistreated, and needed his protection. Stalin signed a "non-agression act" with Hitler. A few months later Germany, and Russia committed to never attack each other.
