The first Graffiti
In New York City the first form of graffiti came around it was known as tagging. You wrote your name or colours on doors, walls, on the subways an d other public places. -
Taki 183
Taki 183 made it in the New York Times and became the first famous graffiti artist. -
Period: to
New styles
Graffiti artists started using spray cans to paint bigger names and in more bold writing, the term throw ups was made which was quickly made paint.
Quantity was the most important thing. This period was from 1971-1974. -
The buff
New York City decided to declare war on graffiti, this event was known as the buff, their mission was to clean the city of graffiti to make it clean. This meant that it was harder finding places where it was allowed to paint and new painters started to destroy other people's work to make room for their own. -
Murals
In the late 70s murals was very popular and you had to be down with painting a train or two if you wanted to get popular and people formed crews so that it wouldn't take so long and so the paintings could be better. -
Spraying galleries
In order to contain the graffiti the authorities made walls and halls where it's allowed to paint graffiti, but the painters found ways to get around the buff, for example pre made stickers that could be sat on lampposts and other stuff.
