    Greek fighting Ottoman empire for independence, leaving them with large foreign debt.

    Irish Potato Famine

    Potatoes were a very important crop in Ireland, many people in rural areas relied on it almost solely in their diet while for others it was still a huge part. Still, they didn't have a wide variety of potatoes so when the potatoes got sick well... it created a famine. Potatoes rotted in their fields and it happened again and again the next few years. In order to escape this famine many left Ireland for the US.
  • The February Revolution (France 1848)

    This revolution broke out mainly due to a conservative leader as well as angry members of the working class who were mad at the government for not doing a good job at fixing the depression of 1846-7. This political turmoil caused over 20,000 french people to immigrate to America between then and 1851

    Norwegian Immigration

    At this time there was a devastating famine in Norway, and other Scandinavian countries, in order to survive many left these countries and moved to the US This large wave of immigration did not slow down until about 1873 due to a financial crisis.

    Finland didn't have the best farming conditions in the 1870s not to mention the job opportunities in America which many saw as better than the low wages and unemployment it Finland. So during this time about 340,000 people came from Finland to the US and many of them could be found in Minnesota.

    Many, in general immigrated to America because it had better job opportunities than where they were. Better economy, better jobs, etc. it's a pull factor.

    Greek War Against Turkey

    The war resulted because of Greece trying to expand their territory, they (despite having limited resources) took up the offensive position and basically attacked Turkey.

    Greek Civil War

    The Greek Civil war took place in 1944 soon before Nazi Germany stopped occupying it. The war was caused and fought by Greek communists who were trying to take it over, they failed. Also the war took place in two different waves.

    There wasn't much immigration to the US during WWII but afterwards many people from Greece did come dew to a bad economy

    The US immigration act allowed more people to immigrate to America. Many Greeks took advantage of this act and immigrated, usually to be with family members already in the US.
