    French Revolutionary government granted citizenship to wealthier Affranchis. European population disregarded the law and in 2 months fighting broke out. In August thousands of slaves rebelled.

    LegerFelicite Sonthonax was sent from France to Haiti to maintain order and offered freedom to slaves who joined his army.

    Toussaint Louverture gained control of several areas and earned the support of French agents. Pursued his own dreams.

    Toussaint Louverture named himself "governor-general for life".

    Touissant Louverture dies.

    The entire island was declared independent under the name Haiti.

    Dessalines assumed the title of Emperor Jacques I.

    The Island of Haiti divided into 2 parts, the Kingdom and the Republic.

    The French withdrew fully from the island of Haiti.

    The U.S. recognized Haiti as a country.
