While some in the legislature are tirelessly striving to extend equality in all facets of life, Rep. Kraig Powell claims that "Utah law still prefers heterosexual parents." Powell's bill would allow preferential treatment to hetereosexual couples in adoption. This is unconstitutional but not surprising for Utah. Powells bill opposes HB 234

    First reading in the House
House Bill 234 was introduced to change the nomanclature on the legal documents regarding adoption. Changing the words "man and woman" and "husband and wife," to "legally married" and "spouse" in accordance with the new Supreme Court ruling making same-sex marriage legal as well as recent rulings in same-sex adoption cases. Since this issue affects me personally, I am extremely grateful that Rep. Romero has proposed this amendment as well as to Rep Urquhart for sponsoring it.

I wish there were more people like Urquhart that were willing to stand up and make this state more fair, more equal for all.

Christensen bullies legislature over HB 234
I agree with the author on this. Christensen miused his role to bully the legislature with this issue. There was no fairness here, and the rules of engagement were violated. Christensen Should be Stripped of Chairmanship

I am deeply saddened by this. I had hope that the legislature would do the right thing, or, at the very least, follow the law of the land. For a state that claims such deep and abiding value in family, they work awfully hard to block important family relationships that would strengthen society. I am heartbroken that this did not even make it out of the House. Four years ago, I had to sit in a courtroom with my four children and pretend that I had no vested interest in them while my sweetheart became the sole legal parent. I was even made to sign a paper designating myself as no relation. Now, we have to go through legal process again to make me an "official" parent. Utah was one of a very few states that did not allow for legal co-parenting acknowledgement.
  • Amendment recommendation

returned to rules. The beggining portion that contained the moral and religious beliefs was stricken while the terminology for the adopting adults was changed to reflect person instead of a gendered identity.
