  • Establishment of Henrico

    Establishment of Henrico
    Virginia settlers established Henrico to teach native students about reading and knowledge of Christian values. This was evangelistic: to save the innocents' souls. This lead to conflict between Virginians and Native Americans and lead to Native children getting sick and dying due to the introduction of English diseases. This is important because it started the practice of the removal of native beliefs and caused many deaths of native children.
  • New England Town Schools

    New England Town Schools
    The first true public school in the United States was opened on April 23, 1635 in Boston, Massachusetts. Boston Latin school was a secondary school created only for boys to prepare them for higher education.
  • Change in Voting Rights

    Change in Voting Rights
    In 1828, all white men had, finally gained the right to vote. This right gave white men the realization that white men of all social classes needed general knowledge and civic virtue, which could be provided by education. Tax-supported, publicly controlled, and directed non-sectarian schools were argued for, and became almost a reality in all northern states, and North Carolina in the south, by 1850.
  • The Cardinal Principles Report

    The Cardinal Principles Report
    A report that believed high schools should have a more comprehensive approach to education. It placed equal focus on arts, vocational development, citizenship education, physical education, and the personal needs of students. This system also put a focus on having students decide their career paths with making their own class decisions, alongside having core-curriculum courses. This was significant due to the student focus of the system.
  • Public Law 94-142; IDEA

    Public Law 94-142; IDEA
    The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act addressed students with special needs and provided them the resources they needed to have an acceptable education. The act was amended multiple times to include more children through 2004. This is important because more students than ever are able to acquire educations then previously in the history of education.
