Emperor Justinian the Great declares rules to restrict Byzantine citizenship to christians only. Jewish civil rights were heavily restricted including the banishment of the use of Hebrew language and the Shema Yisrael (jewish prayer). Jewish synagogues are transformed into churches as well.

First Crusade

The first crusade occurred in the later years of the eleventh century. In an area between Germany and France known as the “Rhineland” several Jewish communities are destroyed, mass suicides take place and many Jews are massacred. Roughly 5000 Jews are killed.

Yellow Hat

Pope Innocent III declares that Jews are to be marked in the public eye by what they wear. Jews were forced to wear a special yellow hat or face death.
