    Common School MovementThe Common School movement was an attempt give the nations citizens and equal and quality education, paid by the government. The idea was to give the citizens the knowledge they need to choose a leader for the nation. This is significant because it started the chain reaction that has formed our education system today.

    Massachusetts Laws of 1642 and 1647

    Massachusetts Laws of 1642 & 1647 made it a requirement for towns that or settlements that had more than 50 people needed to hire a teacher. Settlements with more than 100 need to have a Grammar School. This is where we begin to see government play a significant role in education.

    Horace Mann
    Horace Mann was born May 4, 1796. He set a standard for schools. Got tax supported education. He started the idea of a common school. He wanted every citizen to have an equal education to help improve the nation as a whole. Education is the key to america’s future.

    School shapes our youth. Public education would allow citizens to have the knowledge to choose their rulers. Jefferson proposed elementary school. Public education was essential to democracy.

    John Dewey was a philosipher born October 20, 1859. He was known as the Father of progressive education. If schools were anchor in the development of the student/child education would change. Child center education. Outdoors, hands on activity, playground.

    *The Growth of Education afte the Civil War*

    After the Civil War, everyone one wanted to get a education. “a whole race wanted to go to school.” People began to move out west for new beginnings. School was used to attract settlers in new founded towns. All these schools were being built they needed more teachers. Young educated women began to move out west to become teachers. It was not what they expected. The main idea of this was to get a respected perfession for women.

    This movement helped enforce child labor laws and got more students to go to school. This has really shaped the education system today by taking that idea of focusing on students stregnths and using them to help them learn what they need to know in the real world.
  • The Gary Plan

    The Gary Plan was part of the progressive movement. The idea was to give the studentsa rich educational experience, get the students into activities they enjoy. Work, Study, Play methods. progressive education helped tap into everyone’s skills. Hands on work, hand on educations. The school was their to help the students become good citizens, americanized. The public school was there to teach the students what the parents couldn’t. Hygene, manners, helped socialized students and their family.

    Brown v. Board of Education (1954)Brown vs. Board of Education was the taken to the Supreme Court. Although the court agreed that segregation was hurtful towards the idea of everyone getting the equal opportunity to gain an education, they were really able to enforce it until the federal government was able to get more money for the education system. They then only funded schools that practiced integration.

    They wanted to give everyone an equal oppertuntiy to gain an education. "An equal chance at education gave an equal chance at life." They wanted the son of a farmer to become president if they wanted and worked towards that. EQUAL OPPERTUNITY.

    provide $40 billion to underprivileged students, This allowed the federal government to be in charge of schools. “are you intergrated?” you don’t get your funds,

    What is the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act?Individuals with Disabilities in Education Act, 1975 allowed students with disabilities to get free, appropriate education. This also include transition services. Looking at the big picture to help improve life long term. This increased not only their graduation rate, but also their quality of life in their later years. These extra services were in charge of looking at the big picture and helping them achieve their full potential.

    A Nation at Risk was a report done by President Regan letting the know that a rising tide of mediocrity is bring down the nation's education. He moved to create high standards in the schools, more homework, federal government took a step back out of the education system, and left the states to deal with these new reforms.   • Sarah Roberts

    Sarah Roberts
    Sarah Robert's father wanted her to go to a better school, a closer school. Her application was denied because of her race. Mr. Roberts and Sarah's story helped launch the Browns vs Sumners case which lead up to the Brown vs. the Board of Education which officially ended segregation in public schools legally. Sarah Roberts sparked the fire that ended segregation.
  • The School Choice Movement

    The School Choice Movement helped improve the quality of education by adding competition. School that were afraid to be shut down worked on improving and becoming better. This also allowed the students' education to be more personal since the classes were smaller in the alternative schools.
