*** TOP 5 *** In order to get something changed, there needs to be someone who sees a need and then acts, Horace Mann understood that education was important and traveled around the territories to inspect the conditions of those schools and made recommendations for ways to improve them. His desire to train teachers continues to help improve education today.

Education is important so now all children are required to be in school. If they weren't in school, there were consequences. -

Progressive Education. Hands-on learning for students. Students were exposed to work-related activities, socialization experiences, and planned physical exercise in addition to the basic academic subjects. Great opportunity for students to learn in an interactive environment. -

Hands on learning style accepted. Curriculum should focus on connecting multiple subjects and be about the children more than the teacher. Teachers should just be a facilitator to their learning. -

*** TOP 5 ***. The beginning of desegregation in schools. A step in the right direction to achieving equality. This is important because education should not be excluded to certain races. Each of us, no matter our race, has the ability to learn and should be given the same opportunities to excel in life. Having choices and options are important in being able to do what is best for you as an individual. Families could now decide which type of school they enrolled their children. -
Elementary & Secondary Education Act
Enforced equal opportunity for everyone. The first time federal government money was spent for Elementary & Secondary Education. They could now spend money on getting students they needed to help them succeed. Became a War on Poverty. -
Title IX passed
*** TOP 5 *** Women now have the opportunity to play the same amount of sports that men can. Discrimination against girls in all aspect of education ended. Just because we are women, does not mean we shouldn't have the same opportunities as boys to develop those skills and compete. IDEA passed
** TOP 5 *** All students no matter their disability could receive an education.. They could now hire special needs teacher and provide ramps, etc. to accomodate their needs. This was a great law! We still see the benefits today from the education of the disaabled. A Nation at Risk
Increased the standards for education. Important because there were now plans in place to hold teachers and schools accountable for what they were teaching. Students needed to reach certain standards. -
No Child Left Behind
Became a way to assess the learning of students. Held schools accountable for the learning of their students and proposed ways to improve that education if they were below the standard.
