    First Public Library in the U.S.
    Sometime in 1698, the first library in the United States was established in Charles Town South Carolina. Jonathon Amory, a man who was in association with the library was ordered to spend 53 pounds on books for the library. Unfortunately, this library didn't make it far into the 19th century. Libraries and books in general, are pivotal to education. Books can create a vast imagination in children and teach children things a teacher can't.
  • Brown vs. Board of Education

    Brown vs. Board of Education
    Many people know of this historical date or have at least heard of it. On this date, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled it unconstitutional for racial segregation to occur in public schools. This was ultimately brought to attention and decided because of a young African American girl named Linda Brown, who was denied admission to a an elementary school. This monumental day is so vital to the history of education because it shows that every child, regardless of race is entitled to public education.

    Head Start Programs
    The Head Start Program was launched initially as an 8-week summer camp, however, it soon became a program aimed for low-income families. It was used as a preschool program to help these children meet many different needs, more than educational. Some of these needs were emotional, social, health, nutritional, and psychological. This event in Educational History shows that the class of a family should not determine whether or not a young child receives the preparation needed to be successful.

    No Child Left Behind
    The No Child Left Behind Act was signed on this date by President George W. Bush. The objective of this act is to ensure that each child gets a high-quality education. Within this bill is four main pillars: Accountability, Flexibility, Research-Based Education, and Parent Options. This is important to the history of education because it shows equality and fairness for each child. Regardless of class, race, disabilities, gender, and more.

    Sandy Hook Elementary School
    The mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary took the lives of 20 children and 6 adults. Although this is not the first school shootings to occur, it was one of the deadliest in America. Due to the increase in mass shootings, a protocol is being taken in schools and intruder drills are a common factor for students to go through. There is no denying this incident is tragic, however, it has brought light to the issue and is now part of everyday education.
