    Jefferson Advocating for Education

    Jefferson thought educaion was very important. He thought public education was necessary to democracy.
  • Northwest Land Ordinance of 1785

    This set up a standardized system for settlers to buy land. This helped people move west.
  • Noah Webster's Spelling Book

    In 1790 Noah Webster created an american spelling book. These were used in the schools by the children.
  • State Wide School Systems

    This was a tremendous year! For the first time, there were state wide school systems coming to life!
  • Horace Man Became Secretary

    In 1837 Horace Mann was the first person to become the secretary of the State Board of Education. He had a great impact on the history of education. He started the common school movement.

    In 1846 there was the very first petition for black to be able to attend the same schools as whites. This was brought up by Sara Roberts dad and fought very hard. But in the end it was ruled against.

    After the Roberts case wasn't passed, this was the first law passed in Boston aboloishing segregation in schools. This allowed black to attend the same schools and whites.

    This was a committee of educators that worked together and recommended the standardization of schools.

    During this time many people were moving West with their families. People were making towns along the way and trying to get people to stop by alluring them with schools.

    This was a very big legal case wanting the desegregation of schools. Altough it did work for some schools and the blacks were allowed, it didn't work for everyone. But it was a good way to start the movement.

    After the Brown vs. Board of Educaton failing to desegregate all schools this act was put into place. This was the law that really desegregated ALL schools. Blacks and whites could now go to school together.

    This was an act passed by LBJ that gave schools over 1 billion dollars for use.

    This was an act that provided the oppurtuntiy for children with disabilites to go to normal public schools. This allowed those students to be treated like any other child.
  • A Nation At Risk Report

    A Nation At Risk was a report sent out by Ronald Reagan saying that kids were falling behind in school. They didn't know what they should and we needed to do better.
  • No Child Left Behind

    No child left behind was an act passed that put a lot of pressure on teachers. It wanted assessment in basic skills and teachers had to test thier students.
