  • First Public High school

    First Public High school
    The first public high school started in Boston in 1821. Public school was created as another option to Latin grammar school. It taught young men basic education for a profession that did not require college. The public schools offered similar education as the academy's but was more affordable if not free.
  • The Cardinal Principles Report of 1918

    With the growing population attending public high schools, the Cardinal Principles belived that all students should follow the same course of study. The report in 1918 wanted high schools to focus more on traditional liberal arts, vocational development, citizenship education, physical activity, and personal needs instruction. Guidane and counseling programs along with aptitude tests helped students make career selections.
  • Brown v. Board of Education

    Brown v. Board of Education
    The U.S. Supreme Court unanimously agreed that separate but equal was in no way equal. They decided that segregating public schools denied African American students equal protection. There was massive uproar from the from Southern States. It was decided that to prepare children to be good citizens they shouldn't be segregated by race.
  • PL 94-142

    PL 94-142
    PL 94-142 later became known as the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).The law required that children with disabilities recieve a free education, individualized education services, special education services, related services, due process procedures, and least restrictive learning environment.
  • No Child Left Behind Act

    No Child Left Behind Act
    The No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) was created to hold states and districts accountable for making sure all students were recieving the same education. NCLB required school to hire teachers with documented subject matter to teach core subjects. The state could take over a school that failed the required testing after five consecutive years
