  • First Education Law

    A group of selectman had chosen what children should be taught and who will teach them. They ended up only picking one person to teach the children. After five years, each township with 50 had to declare a teacher for reading and writing. Each township with 100 had to provide school for grammar.
  • Education In The Colonial Period

    During the Colonial Period, most people were protestant. This means the schools were focused on their religion and not the others. The textbooks made fun of the Irish and they were not welcomed. This changed overtime, and they didnt include religion anymore in the texts, or lessons they were teaching.
  • Monitorial, Charity, & Infant School

    Monitorial school had one main teacher, and many monitiory to watch over the kids. The children got into groups and rotated.Charity schools were for the poor. This helped because the poorer would still be getting a basic eduation.Infant schools were for the little kids, which is now kindergarten.

    Benjamin Rush was against the death sentence. He encouraged a place for the mentallly ill. He helped organized the first abiliton society in philideplhia. Rush was also an advocate for women and founded the first female academy.
  • Jefferson

    Jefferson made many contributions to education which impacted a lot of people. Jefferson's bill was the establishment for basic education. Jefferson also founded the University of Virginia. He believed in education for everybody, and helped make that possible.

    Horace Mann Biography...Horace Mann intervened with the state to build institutions. He went on horse back from district to distric and wrote detailed reports of the school houses the kids were being taught in. Eventually Mann establish free tax support of education for kids after being opposed. Horace is an inspiration to me now because he never gave up on working toward education for all.

    For More Information On The Common School Movement...In New England, big towns had to build schools or else the schools were not public/free. Parents had to pay for teachers that were hired by the people. Children were forced to go to school if their parents paid. Now, public school is free for all but parents still work hard in order to give students an education.
  • Committee Of Ten

    A group of educators recommended standardization of American high school curriculum. "..every subject which is taught at all in a secondary school should be taught in the same way and to the same extent to every pupil.." They required English, Mathematics, and History be taught in every school.
  • John Dewey

    John Dewey established his own lab school at the University of Chicago. He was all for child centered curriculum and wanted children to build experiences instead of just memorizing things. He truly wanted what he thought was best for the children.

Linda Brown spoke for most, and said that segregation had to end, because they were not being fair to the African Americans, and their books were 4-5 years behind the whites. It's important to recognize that we are all equal now because of this event and that education is offered to every race.

    For More Information On Civil Rights Act...This bill garunteeed the equiality for all men which included that the federal government provided funds for schooling. They had the right to go into the school and make sure they are including the African Americans, and if not, they would cut off the funds. This made sure the southern states would integrate the African Americans. Now, we accept African Americans and support them.
  • Disabilities Act

    Before 1975, children with disabilities were denied an education in school, and they were very much excluded. None of the children with disabiliites were allowed education until the education for all handicapped children in states was protected by this act to give children with disabilities rights.
  • Child Study Movement

    The Child Study Movement observed the children emotionally and their different personalities. This movement helped with learning about how children think, and grow. This helped pyschologists and teachers to better help their students.
  • Education In The 20th Century

    Education in the late 19th century and early 20th century has increasd rapidly. This is including schools, economics, jobs, expansion in the railroad for trades. We are still growing a ton today. From 1890-1920 school enrollment went up 70%.

    For More Information On No Child Left Behind Act...Students were tested annually in many subjects to know what education students already know and what they need to learn. It helps promote social justice in education where attention can be focused on the more needy children often from poorer families. I think this law is very important to us as teachers now so we can help all of our students succeed individually and as a whole.
