    Auguste and Louis Lumiere designed and developed a small, hand-held camera called the cinematographe. They discovered that it could be used to project film onto lsrger screens as well. They began creating short films that were pivotal in te history of filmmaking.

    Kinetoscope
    W. K. Laurie Dickson, assistant to Thomas Edison, develops a working protottype of the kinetoscope. Final revsisions are mad eto the kinetoscope in 1892. W. K. Dickson received a patent for motion picture film in 1894.

    Hollywood
    Independent filmmakers moved to California because of nice weather and also to escape the grasp of Thomas Edison and his MPPC. Edison and his team would break the equipment and threaten the actors of independent filmmakers. Los Angeles quickly became the capital of the film industry.

    The 1920s were an exciting age in the history of filmmaking. Larger studios were springing up in hollywood such as MGM and Paramount. As film stars grew in popularity, the era of the Hollywood Super Star picked up speed. Many actors became very well known for their work, and thus movies had larger audiences.

    Lee De Forest demonstrates the work of the phonofilm sound-on-film system. He created a short series of musical films featuring vaudeville performers. This was the beginning of the film industry's use of sound in their films.

    MGM
    Marcus Loew gained access to three production companies that initially were working independently. He combined Metro Pictures, Goldwyn Pictures, and Louis B. Mayer Pictures to create Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures. This company quickly became one of the biggest of its time.

    Disney's Steamboat Willie premieres, included a synchronized soundtrack. It included music, sound effects, and dialogue. It also marked the introduction of Mickey Mouse.
  • Academy Awards Begin

    Academy Awards Begin
    In 1927, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences was created by Louis B. Mayer. Before 1933, the awards did not go by year, which is why there are no awards for best actor or actress in 1932. The awards were created by Mayer in order to unite the five branches of the industry, including actors, direction, producers, technicians, and writers.

    The first showing of documentary film was at the National Film Theater in London. Free Cinema was a documentary film movement that erupted in England in the 1950s in an act to remove propaganda and deliberate box office appeal from the art of filmmaking. Their last event was held in March of 1959.

    Walt Disney's Death occurred during the production of The Jungle Book, The Happiest Millionaire, and Winnie the Pooh and the Blustery Day. These three films were the last Disney films under his personal supervision.
