  • UNIX Operating System Created

    UNIX Operating System Created
    The Unix operating system was created at AT&T's Bell Laboratoris in 1969. Leading the project were Ken Thompson and Dennis Ritchie. It was a group of language-based operating systems that set the precedent for what would eventually become the Linux operating system.
  • Linux Kernal Created

    Linux Kernal Created
    Linus Trovalds began coding the early version of the Linux kernal. It was initally conceived for his specific hardware but eventually became an operating system.
    He announced it's completion on an online message board on August 21, 1991.
  • Linux Gets Popular

    100 developers began contributing to the Linux kernal. This greatly helped prepare the software for GNU.
  • Linux 1.0 Released to the Public

    Linux 1.0 was released after the kernal was compeleted. The software was published by Red Hat and Suse in 1994.
  • Linux Version 2.0 Released

    Torvalds released Linux 2.0 in 1996. Performance improvments were added, and most notably, symmetric multiprocessing, which allowed for using more than one processor at the same time.

    Microsoft's "Get The Facts" LetterIn 2004, with increasing competion amongst Windows and Linux, Microsoft published results concerning favorability of Windows about Linux. This created intense animosity between the two companies.
    Dedicated Linux users began doing their own research in an attempt to combat Microsoft's publishing titled "Unbending the Truth"
