    Coral Way Elementary School
    First bilingual and bicultural public school in the United States is established as Coral Way Elementary School. A school that incorporated Spanish speaking immigrants with English speaking natives due to the increasing number of immigrants fleeing Cuba in this time period.
  • The Bilingual Education Act

    The Bilingual Education Act
    In 1968 the Bilingual Education Act or Title VII became law. This law provided funding to schools to give children that spoke a language other than English resources to allow them to succeed.This law was the beginning of later laws geared towards making sure every child has access to a complete education.
  • Diana v. California State Board

    Diana v. California State Board
    In 1970 a student that spoke English as a second language. A standardized test that was given in English and was partially focused on verbal communication indicated that she had a low IQ. She was placed in class for students with intellectual disabilities because of this. In the case it was found that when she was tested in her first language she tested above the IQ range that would warrant these classes. This case created a chance for the school system to examine and correct standardized tests.

    The Indian Education Act recognized that American Indians and Alaskan Native students had unique learning needs. This law provides learning opportunities related to their cultural and language needs.
  • Case of Lau v. Nichols

    Case of Lau v. Nichols
    A case in regards to the failure of San Francisco's school district to provide adequate education to Chinese-American children that did not speak English. The case was argued and it was decided that San Francisco's school district did fail to do this and it was a violation of the Civil Rights Act. The result of this case was to require schools to provide the equal access to educational opportunities for all students English and non English speakers alike.

    Equal Educational Opportunities Act
    The Equal Educational Opportunities Act was enacted to prevent discrimination of students and school staff based upon their race, gender, color, or national origin.
  • Founding of National Associations of Bilingual Education

    Founding of National Associations of Bilingual Education
    The National Associations of Bilingual Education was founded in order to advocate for educational equality for bilingual and multicultural students.
  • No Child Left Behind Act

    No Child Left Behind Act
    The No Child Left Behind Act was created to make schools accountable for educating all of its students. This requires yearly standardized testing to verify yearly progress. This Act was approved in 2001 and signed into law 01/08/2002. This act "updated" and replaced previous laws including the Bilingual Education Act.

    Transgender Bathroom Issue
    The Federal government directs school districts to allow transgender students to use the restroom of the gender they identify as. This is not a law but failure to follow the directive can result in loss of funding.
