  • Talkies

    Talkies
    Talkies were the fist useof music video to be made. Instead of silent film they had music elemnts and a narrative.
  • First Music Video

    Toby Bennet supposedly created the first music video according to his biography. The Video consisted of him walking along Hiyde Park in London and was distributed to Uk and US television stations were it was aired on shows such as "Dick Clark" and "American Bandstand"
  • Scopitone

    The Scopitone was a visual Jukebox invented in France. It was used by a lot of French artists in the late 1950's and eventually similar machines spread across to Italy and the US.
  • Lip Syncing

    Manny Pittson was the first person to use lip syncing in a music video. He would go on location with the artists of there respected song and film them singing. He would then mix the audio and visuals to create the first use of lip syncing in music video.
  • The Beatles- Help!

    The Beatles were the first band to create a new style of modern music video. They went on location around the world and filmed there hit "Help!". This video used high and low camera shots, close ups and out fo focus shots. This new style was never seen before as music videos prior to this consisted of an artist singing into a camera.
  • The Kinks

    The Kinks
    The kinks were one of the first bands to make a promo clip with there single "dead end street". It was a comic strip and was banned from being aired by the BBC for "poor taste"
  • Cross Cutting

    Cross Cutting
    The 1970's saw the start of cross cutting. This is where the artist would use there music video to tell a story. It would then "cross-cut" to a take that would show a story then back to the artist singing. This was used by such artists as the jackson five.
  • MTV

    In 1981 MTV (Music Television) was created. This was the first TV channel ever to stream non stop music videos 24 hours a day. This was a massive break through for Music Video and encouraged almost all artists to create there own music videos.
  • Music Video Directors

    MTV started listing Directors of music videos along with the artists and song writers. This shows how video started playing a big part in the music industry.
  • YouTube

    YouTube
    In 2005 YouTube (a video sharing website) was created and soon became the most popular website to find and view music videos. This was a massive change for music video production though did promote a lot of piracy.
