  • First YWCA Gymnasium

    First YWCA Gymnasium
    • First YWCA gymnasium opened in Boston, Massachusetts to help keep women healthy and fit. -The organiztaion came together to promote leadership and justice for young women
    • During this time period women didnt have that many rights. So having a place like the YWCA was a great way for women to achive a higher education and to become leader.
    • Today YWCA is increasing in social, racial, and gender equity to promote better health in communities
  • AAHPERD was founded

    AAHPERD was founded
    • The first meeting held was at Adelphi University where 60 people who where in the gymnastics field talked about their profession and different methods of teaching.
    • AAHPERD pretty much helped set the guidliness to help teachers come up with lesson plans and different activities to help succed in their profession.
    - Not only does AAHPERD help come up with lesson plans it helps you find a job in your field and makes sure that you are ready to take on your job and teach people health and pe
  • First Basketball Played

    First Basketball Played
    -Dr. Luther Gulick challenged his students to make a new game. He wanted them to come up with a new game that was to be played indoors and you could not tackle anybody
    - He then signed James Naismith to a class of boys who where challenged to event new game.
    -This helped provide phys ed teachers to teach new types of progressions on teaching basketball skills. It also gave kids free time away from their problems at home or at school
  • Olympics Athens, Greece

    Olympics Athens, Greece
    • On April 6,1896 the first modern day olympics took place in Athens Greece. -14 nations took part in the olympics -241 athletes took place in a variety of 43 eventd in which not all took in place in all of the events. But they did particapate in the ones that they are best at. -The first modern day olympics helped build different activities that we could use in Physical Education today. Instead of teaching kids just american sports, we could now teach them sports from other countries.
  • Public School Athletic League

    Public School Athletic League
    -Founder Dr. Luther Halsey Gulick
    -Provides Physical Fitness and 22 varsity sports. They have 37,000 student athletes from over 400 public schools.
    -Interscholastic competition in New York City public schools
    -Helps provide students to stay fit and healthyw hile having fun playing the sport they love with friends from schools. It also gives oppertunity for physical education teachers to coach
  • NCAA

    NCAA
    -Was founded to help protect student athletes from any type of illegal action and making sure they are safe.
    -It helps increase academics and athletics throughout each student.
    -NCAA consits of 3 divisions D1 where you could be recruited, D2 you could be recruited as well but its less competive, and D3 you can not be recruited and it is also less competive.
    -To be eligable you need have a certain gpa, clean recruiting, and you cant particapate after a 5th year
  • Boy Scouts of America

    Boy Scouts of America
    -Helped build the youth to be leaders and maturity.
    -It also helped them stay in physical shape. They would go on hiking trips and perform task that helped them stay fit.
    -They found over the years boy scouts is the key to helping build the youth future

    -The Selective Service Act forced the ages f 18 - 25 to join the military
    - Physical Educators provided leadership to the armed force and of the people back home with physical conditioning program
    -Women also played a big part providing physical activity to the armed force and the community

    -The first winter olympics took place every 4 years and was established couple years after the first modern olympics
    -Took place in France
    -Some what more challenging then the summer olympics
    -Sports that are played are hockey, figure skating, curling, ski jumping, etc.

    -During the depression 40% of physical education courses where cut in schools.
    -Budgets where cut back and many progras where cut or downgraded
    -Recreation started to become bigger through the depression. Physical education teachers where being sent to homes where families where unemployed and they would help them stay active with recreation activties and sports

    -The dust bowl took place during the great depression farm lands and crops where getting destoryed
    -Winds would pick up to 60 miles per hour destroying farm lands. The dust would be so bad that crops would get destoyed.
    -Not only did the depression have a huge impact on society but with fresh vegetables and fruit getting destroyed it would not be able to help people live healthy life style

    First Little League Baseball Game
    -Established by Carl Stotz
    -It was played a couple yards way from his house. It was in his backyard where he grew up always having catch with his nephews
    -This established the little legue worldseries. Where kids all over the world come to particapate in the league.
    -It gives kids a great activity during the spring and summer. It also makes sure they are staying activie when school is over

    Thomas K. Cureton
    -Established the Physical Fitness Research
    -He engaged in helping students with teaching, reaserching, etc.
    -He helped many organizations with providing healthy lifestyle
    -He was the pioner of phys ed. He did so much in his research that it put phys ed on the right path
  • Jackie Robinson Eneters The MLB

    Jackie Robinson Eneters The MLB
    -Broke baseball color barrier by being first African - American professional baseball player
    -Before he broke the color barier their was two seperate leagues one for African - Americans and the MLB which at the time did not allowe African - Americans to join.
    - He did not just change baseball history. But he made a change in sports, by letting people know he does not care how fans treat him. Hes going to deal with it and keep breaking records and making historical changes.
  • Brown vs Board of Education

    Brown vs Board of Education
    -Brown vs Board of Education stated that segragation between schools was not what the 14th ammendment stated. Now public schools will be equal.
    -This helped physical education teachers not only work with more then one race but to provide the same actvities and health notes to all race and gender.
    It also helps phys ed teachers to also be more of role model towards how racism should not be tolerated.

    President's Council on Youth Fitness (President's Council On Physical Fitness
    -Founded by Presidnet Eisenhower, he gathered a group to make this council becuase he was notified by James B. Kelly and James Duff that there was a study that showed 60% of the kids in the United States Failed a fitness test.
    -This council helped establishe organizations such as the YMCA, AAU and other programs.
    -This would then help kids stay fit and able to live a healthier lifestyle.
    -The council name got changed when President John F. Kennedy took office.
  • Glory Road 1966 NCAA Championship

    Glory Road 1966 NCAA Championship
    • Texas Western University head coach Don Haskins started five African - Americans for the first time in NCAA history -Took place during the Civil Rights Movement, No team ever started African - American student athlete -Not only did Don Haskins make a change in sports so did those five African - American student athletes. They battled through segrgation and racial slurs with other teams, fans, and teammates. They proved to everybody that night they are just as good as everybody else
  • Special Olympics

    Special Olympics
    -Founded by Eunice Kennedy Shriver. She recognized how unfair kids with disabilities and special needs didnt have a place to play.
    -People with intellectual diasbilities from United Stated and Canda competed in track and field.
    -This helped advance physical education by not just working with kids who dont have diabilities but now to work with those kids who have special need. Physical education teachers could now provide kids with special need with activities they could use at home/school
  • Title IX

    Title IX
    • Prohibits sex discrimination in any educational program and activity.
    • It also gives opportunities for women to particapate in intercollegiate and interscholastic sports.
    • Titles IX made a huge impact by increasing physical education and athletics.
    • Even though title IX is mandated for people to be treated equal their are some physical education teachers who still treat women less equal to men. But title IX made a huge impact over the years.
  • Public Law 94 - 142

    Public Law 94 - 142
    -The law stated that kids would need I.E.P to show that they are allowed to be qualified for extra help and classes to help them throughout their learning.
    -Kids who are hanicaped or have learning disabilitie are allowed to be in class with eachother learning at their own pace.
    -You have to be tested befor being approved for I.E.P which helps kids get one on one help with what they have trouble learning. You could be allowed to have seperate location for test, and extra time

    -Every year in the month of may phys ed teachers and health organizations proote that students and parents should take advantage of the activity and health resources they have.
    -This is would help students learn more about health and have fun learning it.
    -They dont have to just particapate in this during school they could do it after school in their local park or YMCA. Maybe even at home
  • Applied Sport Psychology

    Applied Sport Psychology
    -Promotes development science and ethical practice
    -AASP provides leadership, and provides oppertunities to share information on related theory development.
    -One of the main goals is to serve athletes, coaches, and parents on knoledge and different developments towards sports.

    -The law states the students with disabilities are allowed to free and appropriate education.
    -They are also allowed to particapate in after school programs and athletics.
    -This helps give kids with special needs away to be looked at equal towards everybody. That just because they have special needs it does not mean they are different.

    -Both organizations teamed up to create a fitness test your the youth.
    -(CIAR) decied to us AAHPERD Physical Best educational materials to promote healthy lifestyle
    -This is a great way for phys ed teachers to find out their students personal health and help them live a healthy lifestyle.
  • No Child Left Behind

    No Child Left Behind
    • George W. Bush signed a document saying that teachers have to be highly qualified to teach and that their shouldnt be a portion of the class understanding the work it should be everybody understanding it. -This act will help students in pe classes to not only get one on one help with a teacher when they need it. It will also help them get better work out.
    • The law states they will hold public school teachers accountabe for their students. They will make sure the childs parents are informed.
  • Lets Move

    • Founder First Lady Michelle Obama
    • Provides kids with access to healthy food in public schools and in their community. It also provides parents with information on healthy habites for their child -Cuts down child obesity by having them stay active -Lets Move is helpful for pe teachers by having kids eat healthy befor and after gym. It also is helpful by giving out new ideas for teachers to provide to students
