    Marconi sent and received first radio signal in 1895 invented radio
  • Audion tube

    Lee De Forest, created( “borrowed” the idea for the) audion tube, a vacuum tube that amplified signals (Fessenden came up with it first but got no credit) helped make radio better
  • Music on Radio

    Music first played on the radio in 1906.

    8XKK (KDKA) created by Frank Conrad and its still around. Its been here for about 93 years

    WEAF aired a 10-minute commercial/ toll broadcast, for an Apartment complex charging $50.

    Uncle Charlie too popular so the FRC. So becasue so many people wanted a radio station you needed a license to have a radio station.
    Uncle Charlie is a way of saying personal radio.

    30s-40s middle of the great Depression everyone wanted a radio to listen to.

    TV makes appearance in the late 30s. Radio looses money shows jumped ship

    Major Edwin Armstrong invented the FM transmitter which made a stronger radio signal.

    WCBN hosts the first National Association of College Broadcasters.

    United States radio stations begin broadcasting in stereophonic sound.

    Sony introduces the Walkman, the first portable stereo.
