    Thomas Alva Edison invented the first machine to record and play back sounds. He called it the phonograph which played the records. His first recording was him saying "Mary had a little lamb."

    Gugliemo Marconi is credited with the invention of the radio. He called it a "wireless telegraph." he first usded it to transmitt a radio signal of morse code.
  • First transatlantic transmission

    First transatlantic radio waves to cross the English channel. Marconi tried to send messages father across the Atlantic. If he could, he would be able to use his system to send messages across the Atlantic for cheap and contact ships over long distances.
  • Audion Tube

    Lee De Forest is credited with the, possibly borrowed, idea of the adion tube. It is an ampilfier of FM waves. It allows the waves to travel futher than they already are.
  • Call letters

    Call letters identify a particular station. For example a Texas station would be KLTY. W is the letter to begin with if you are East of the Mississipppi and K is for the West.

    8MK was a Detroit, MI ameature radio station. It soon was changed to WWJ. It is the first radio station to be owned by a newspaper, The Detroit News.

    KDKA was the first commercial radio station in Pittsburg, PA. The radio stations purpose is to broadcast entertainment and information. Using advertising, it kept radio in business.

    One of the first news broadcasts was on KDKA in Pittsburg. They were talking about the presidential range between Warren G. Harding and James M. Cox. Anyone within the range of the100-WATT station could hear it, even though the range was unknown.

    KDKA in Pittsburg, PA brodcast the first sporting event over radio. The event was a boxing match described by Florent Gibson. Many other sporting events were described after this.

    WEAF in New York broadcasted the first paid radio advertisment for Hawthorne Court Apartments. This changed American radio waves. It also triggerd the movement of commercial radio, Bell Telephone Company.

    In the beginning 12 million American households owned a radio. As technology improved, radios became smaller and cheaper. By 1939 this had exploded to more than 28 million.

    The FM radio was patented by inventor Edwin H. Armstrong. FM uses frequency modulation of the wave to reduce static from electric equipment.

    Les Paul invented audio multitracking. It is a system sound recording that can record multiple sounds at different times and have the ability to put them together. He made a way for modern music.
  • Beatles

    When the Beatles arrived in America and begin their tour of the country. The Beatles first U.S. concert took place at Washington Coliseum. The Beatles tour in the US, marked the spread of "Beatlemania" from the UK to the rest of the world.
