    First School of Special Education in the World
    Charles Michel de l' Epee was the founder of the first public school for the deaf. Institution Nationale des Sourds-Muets à Paris (The Royal Institution of Deaf Mutes) was founded in Paris, France. Dedicated to educating the deaf and teaching them to communicate. They paved the way for sign language. Charles had a total of 19 "disciples" that went on to open their own schools across the globe. This school is still open today.

    First School of Special Education in the U.S.
    The first school for special education in the United States was founded in Hartford, Connecticut. This school came about because parents were voicing their concerns about their deaf children not receiving an education. Thomas Gallaudet and Laurent Clerc founded the school. Gallaudet was the principal and the Clerc was the head teacher.   • Association for Mental Retardation was founded

    Association for Mental Retardation was founded
    The Association of Medical Officers of American Institutions for Idiotic and Feeble-Minded Persons (now known as the American Association for Mental Retardation, or AAMR) became one of the first institutes founded and dedicated to researching mental retardation. This eventually became known as a medical institute and anyone with learning disabilities was viewed as a sick patient that needed medicine in order to be cured.   • The Intelligence Scale

    The Intelligence Scale
    Alfred Binet and Theodore Simon created the intelligence scale, known as the Binet-Simon Scale, in 1905. This scale was a standardized intelligence test for children. Binet and Simon believed the intelligence of children was completely different from that of adults. It was founded in order to identify students in need of special education. Eventually, it became an intelligence for all kinds of children.

  • Council for Exceptional Children

    Council for Exceptional Children
    Elizabeth E. Farrell was the founder and first president of Council for Exceptional Children (CEC). CEC's main goal is to make sure children with disabilities are successful. They have had researchers dedicated to solely discover research that has greatly benefited the education of children with "exceptionalities". Not only does it focus on the success of children with disabilities, but also advocates for the parents and teachers of these children.

  • Rehabilitation Act of 1973

    Rehabilitation Act of 1973
    In 1973, the Rehabilitation Act was passed and enforced the rights of those with disabilities. It was to ensure that they would not be discriminated against in environments of employment, education, and housing. For students with disabilities, this means schools must comply to accommodate classes for the students and/or have them in a special program that the school has to meet the needs of those students.

  • Public Law 94-142

    Public Law 94-142
    Also known as The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), ensures an education is provided to students with specials needs all throughout the country and makes sure that families and disabled children have the right to due process. IDEA incorporated the necessity of the development of the Individualized Education Program (IEP) for a student with disabilities to be provided with special education services.

  • President's Commission on Excellence in Special Education

    President's Commission on Excellence in Special Education
    President George W. Bush created the commission by Executive order 13227. To improve the performance in the education of students with disabilities, Bush charged it with a concern of teaching in local, state, and federal special education programs. This commission was to reinforce the reality Bush's "No Child Left Behind Act" of 2001.

    Autism Speaks is an organization that was co-founded by grandparents who were inspired by their grandson that had autism. They raise awareness and lead in the world's "autism science organization". They also provide information for others to better understand what autism is and help them accept it.     Every Student Succeeds Law
    President Barack Obama signed this act into law on December 10, 2015. This law is to ensure that every student, no matter the background, has an equal opportunity to succeed in their educational careers. It requires that all students be taught and prepared for higher education and careers.This act is targeted for all students and their success in education.
