    Democritus (400BC)

    Democritus (400BC)
He discovered that evrything is made up of atoms.
He used a modern scientific method.
He thought they were so small you couldn't see them. "Democritus Atom." Universe Today. N.p., 22 Mar. 2010. Web. 19 Feb. 2015.
  • Dalton (1803)

    Dalton (1803)
    He discovered the atomic laws.
He did a lot of experiments.
He thought they were the smallesst units of matter. "John Dalton's Atomic Model." Universe Today. N.p., 01 Dec. 2014. Web. 20 Feb. 2015.
  • Thomson (1897)

    Thomson (1897)
He discovered that he had to add electrons.
    He used an experiment.
He thought the atom looked like "Plum Pudding". "J.J. Thomson's Experiment and the Charge-to-mass Ratio of the Electron." J.J. Thomson's Experiment and the Charge-to-mass Ratio of the Electron. N.p., n.d. Web. 20 Feb. 2015.
  • Rutherford (1911)

    Rutherford (1911)
He was forced to discard the plum pudding model and reasoned that the only way the alpha particles.
The method he used was that he tested Thomson's hypothesis by devising his "gold foil" experiment.
He developed the "Planetary Model" of the atom whicch put all the protons in the nucleus and the electrons orbited around the nucleus like planets around the sun. "Rutherford Model of the Atom." Rutherford Model of the Atom. N.p., n.d. Web. 19 Feb. 2015.
  • Bohr

    Bohr
He discovered that electrons could be knocked out of position if a changed particle passed by.
He realized Rutherford's model wasn't quite right. "The orbiting electrons should give off energy and eventually spiral down into the nucleus."
"Planetary Model" The Neutrons and protons are in the middle and the electrons orbit the nucleus. PBS. PBS, n.d. Web. 24 Feb. 2015.
  • Heinsenberg and Schrodinger

    Heinsenberg and Schrodinger
He discovered Schrodinger said that the electrons are waves. Heisenberg said that you cannot know by measurements the position and momentum of a particle simultaneously.
The method he use was that the atoms were now visualized as a nucleus surrounded by a cloud of electrons distrubted according to a wave pattern by the Schrodinger equation.
They claim that the atom looked like waves surrounded the nucleus with electrons on the waves and protons and neutrons in the middle(Nucleus).
