  • In 1915, the Association for the Prevention and Relief of Heart Disease was formed

    Physicians and social workers formed this group because they felt there was not enough information on heart disease. At this time, patients who had heart disease were bedridden, expected to wait for their inevitable death.
  • The American Heart Association was found in 1924.

    Six cardiologists formed a group with the purpose to share research findings and promote future study of heart disease.
  • The National Heart Institue Launched the Framingham Heart Study in 1947

    The National Heart Disease, in collaboration with Boston University, began research on the Framingham Heart Study in 1947. This study followed the heart health of 5,000 participants and their families for over 50 years. The study led to the development of the major risk factors of heart disease.
  • Dr. John Gibbon performs the first open-heart operation performed with the use of the heart-lung machine.

    The heart-lung machine is one of the most important forms of therapy in the history of cardiac disease. The heart-lung machine is used during surgery. While the heart is stopped, the machine acts as a pump and does the work of the heart and lungs during the operation.
  • The president issues an annual proclamation that establishes February as "American Heart Month."

    Lyndon B. Johnson annouces that February would annually be "American Heart Month.' At the time heart disease was responsible for over one-half the deaths in the US.
  • In 1999, the National Coalition of Women with Heart Disease was founded.

    In 1999, three women heart attack survivors found Women Heart. The point of the organization was to improve the health and quality of life of women living with or at risk of heart disease, and to advocate for their benefit.
  • The Heart Truth campaign was launched by the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute, along with Womens Heart and other partners.

    The Nationa Heart Lung and Blood Institute, along with its partners, to give women a personal and urgent wakeup call about their risk of heart disease. The Red Dress is trademarked as their symbol.

  • Nature Made and WomenHeart Partner to Launch 100,000 Heartbeats Campaign to Help the Nation About Heart Health

  • In 2008, Metamucil donates $100,000 to WomenHeart to encourage 100,000 women to get a cholesterol screening.

    In 2008, research showed that 60% of women say they do not know their cholesterol number. The donation was through the effort "Beautify Your Heart" program to encourage cholesterol.
  • WomenHeart Science & Leadership Symposium at Mayo Clinic

    The purpose of the symposium is to train women with heart disease to establish and lead patient support groups for women with heart disease in their local communities.
