Holden's Adventure in New York

  • 1. Holden visits Mr. and Mrs. Spencer, they talk to him about his poor grades. (He is failing in everything except in English)

  • 2. He comes back to Pencey, talks to Ackley and Stradlater.

  • 3. He works on Stradlater's composition about Allie, then he gets into a physical fight with him over Jane Gallagher.

  • 4. Holden leaves Pencey, having been expelled.

  • 5. Holden runs into Mrs. Morrow at a train station, talks to her too. They get into a train.

  • 6. As soon as Holden gets off the train, he gets this urge to call somebody.

    He thinks of calling home, Jane Gallagher, Sally Hayes, and even Carl Luce, but he decides not to call anyone.
  • 7. He gets into a cab, goes to the Edmont Hotel, gets weirded out by the people there.

  • 8. Thought of calling Jane again, instead calls somebody named Faith Cavendish, tries to arrange a hangout, fails.

  • 9. Thinks of calling Phoebe again, worries about his parents finding out that he got kicked out of Pencey, goes to the Lavender Room of the hotel.

  • 10. He notices 3 girls, asks one of them, Bernice, to dance with him, has a chat with her as well.

  • 11. Gets Jane on his mind again, gets another cab to drive him down to Ernie's.

    He hears some weird conversations over at that place, and he also runs into a girl his brother D.B. used to go around with.
  • 12. He walks back to the hotel, calls up a prostitute, only to reject her service, just paying her 5 bucks and finding she asked for 10. Afterwards, he smokes cigarettes before he goes to bed.

  • 13. He wakes up, thinks about breakfast, dismissed the idea of having someone send it up for him, smokes another cigarette. He thinks about calling Jane once more, but he decides to call Sally instead and ask her out.

  • 14. He gets a cab for the third time, asks the driver to take him to Grand Central Station. When he gets there, he strikes up a conversation with two nuns.

    After that conversartion, he starts trying to imagine people he knows as nuns.
  • 15. He buys a vinyl record, Little Shirley Beans, for his sister Phoebe.

  • 16. He finally calls Jane up, ends up talking to her mother.

  • 17. He gets the tickets to the Lunt's show, takes a cab to the park, and thinks about going to the museum, but loses interest when he gets there.

  • 18. He goes down to the Blitmore to his date with Sally at a skating rink, it doesn't end well, which is no big surprise.

  • 19. He calls up Carl Luce, goes to the Wicker Bar to meet him, they talk about sex and stuff.

  • 21. He starts walking over to the park again, drops Phoebe's record, breaking it. It was so cold he worries about getting pneumonia and dying. He heads home.

  • 22. When he gets home, he sees Phoebe and feels happy... Until she points out that he was home early.

    Holden lies to her that they were let home early, and she does not buy it. She freaks out about what would happen if their parents found out. After a bit, they dance, before their mother returns home.
  • 23. He visits Mr. Antolini, who his family has a good relationship with.

    They have a chat and Mr. Antolini fixes up the bed for Holden, but Holden decides to leave instead.
  • 24. He walks over to Lexington and takes the subway to Grand Central.

    He sleeps in the waiting room, thinking about Mr. Antolini and this one boy James Castle.
  • 20. Holden gets drunk, mysteriously gets a bullet thorugh the gut, decided to call Sally, dialing several numbers before getting the right one, ends up speaking to her grandmother first, then he gets to talk to Sally herself. His drunkness bothers her.

  • 25. He gets some breakfast, orders doughnuts and coffee, he doesn't eat the donuts.

  • 26. He goes downtown thinking about Phoebe as well as the uncomfortable feeling that he will never get to the other side of the street.

  • 27. He starts thinking of going away, the details already in his mind.

  • 28. He goes to Phoebe's school, notices some written profanity, starts imagining the profanity being written on his gravestone.

  • 29. He sees Phoebe, says something harsh that upsets her, she says shut up to him for the first time and runs away.

  • 30. He goes to the zoo, Phoebe follows him, they look at the zoo and spend the day together. Holden feels so happy.
