    The independence movement was getting planned by Creoles in Josefa Ortiz de Domínguez’s house with other Creoles.

    Some of the Creoles who refused to join the movement revealed the plan to some peninsulares. Those peninsulares wanted to arrest some people and Hidalgo was one of those. Dominguez informed Allende so that Allende could tell Hidalgo. This made them execute their plan before the date they had planned.

    Grito de Dolores
    Hidalgo knew that he had to start this movement because the Spaniards knew about this. So he went to a church in Dolores and told an audience to fight for Mexico’s independence. Then, he made a “grito” inspiring the citizens and this made Hidalgo the leader of the independence movement.

    Battle of Alhóndiga de Granaditas
    At this date the people were fighting against the Spaniards in Guanajuato. The rebels wanted to take over the Alhóndiga de Granaditas and Hidalgo said they needed to burn the front door. El pipila tied a stone on his back (as a shield) and burnt the door as Hidalgo requested which made the rebels win that battle.

    Battle of Monte de las Cruces
    This was the Battle of Monte de las Cruces in which the rebels fought against the Spaniard troops of General Torcuato. It was fought in the mountains called Sierra de las Cruces near Mexico City and Toluca. Hidalgo and his followers won the battle and received more power and weapons. After that Hidalgo made an error by falling back into Guadalajara instead of going for Mexico City.

    January of 1811 was a really bloody month because many battles were fought. The rebels won some battles and the Spaniards won others. This was because the Spaniard army had time to regroup. The Spaniards were much less people but they had better equipment and were better trained. However, in one battle there was a big explosion and there was a lot of panic so some rebels ran away.

    Hidalgo was caught and arrested with some other important leaders in Chihuahua and was found guilty. He then was sentenced to death so he was shot and his head was cut off and displayed in Guanajuato. Also, this made people get scared and Morelos became the new leader of the movement.

    Jose María Morelos Arrested Then Killed
    In November 5, 1815 there was the Battle of Temalca fought between the Spanish army and the insurgents. Here Morelos was defeated and arrested. After some while he was killed and this left the rebels confused and without a leader. This also made the independence movement much longer.

    Plan de Iguala
    Agustín Iturbide and Vicente Guerrero collaborated to make the Plan de Iguala in Iguala. Three things that were the most important were that the church would remain with the same power, the Creoles were to be as powerful as the Peninsulares and the government system would be a constitutional monarchy. Viceroy Juan Ruiz resigned.

    After about 11 years of fighting Iturbide and the insurgents entered Mexico City. This was the end of the war and Iturbide was crowned as emperor. It is ironic that the first person to be put in power was a Spaniard.
