Mayflower Sets Sail
A merchant ship named the Mayflower set sail from an English port in Plymouth, September 1620. On board were 102 passengers all aiming to start a new life. -
The Mayflower Lands
The Mayflower finally reached Massachusetts on November 21, 1620. The founded the first European settlement located in the New England area later that December. -
Naturalization Act
It was an act set to increase the time period for immigrants to become national citizens. The time period was increased from 5 years to 14 years. -
The Alien Act
John Adams signed the Alien Act on June 25. It was the second piece of his legislation (that included the Naturalization Act) and it allowed Adams and other presidents after him the authority to decide where or not to deport aliens when war was not happening. -
The Alien Enemies Act
President John Adams signed the Alien Enemies Act on July 6. This act allowed him the power to deport any illegal alien that lived in the United States and was or was considered a U.S enemy during war. -
The Sedition Act
John Adams signed the Sedition Act on July 14. It was the fourth and final part of the legislation. This act allowed Adams to have a huge amount of power to define an act of treason such as a scandalous or malicious act/writing. This gave him reasons to deport aliens. -
Homestead Act
The Homestead Act was established on October 5, 1862. This act allowed for homes given to people that were very poor or those who were immigrants. The new land that was given to these people was either free or very cheap. As a result to this act, many immigrants moved to the United States to seek such land deals. -
Immigration Act of 1882
The Immigration Act was established on October 5, 1882. This act taxed immigrants 50 cents when landing on United States ports. Each passenger on a vessel was carefully examined and by a strict criteria. -
Patriot Act
The title of the act is USA PATRIOT (Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism Act of 2001). Department of Homeland security was created due to 9/11 and as a result to this, border control was strengthened. Many restrictions were added to immigration. The act was signed by President George W. Bush. -
Arpaio's Immigration Issues
In the beginning of 2005, Sheriff Joe Arpaio started a immigration sweep, mostly Latino neighborhoods. Arpaio began a large amount of operations that he targeted business that employed Latino workers. -
Arizona Immigration Law
On October 6, 2010 Arizona passed a law that made any person who was considered an illegal alien, a criminal. Arizona police were put in charge of the law. -
Arpaio's Posse
Sometime in November, 2010 Sheriff Joe Arpaio created his armed illegal immigration operations posse that would work for him to enforce any immigration law that was set. -
Smuggle Squad
Sheriff Joe Arpaio" had an immigration smuggle squad. Its task was to stop cars of Latino drivers and passengers. After being pulled over, the smuggle squad checked each rider for their immigration status. A Federal District Court intervened and stopped the smuggle squad and Arpaio in the year of 2011. -
Arizona the First of Many
In late April, Arizona was the first to share its opinion and lead the immigration reform. Amongst the "Gang of Eight" were a few Arizona senators. Their thoughts and ideals were many used to create a reform that would later become the cornerstone for negotiations of immigration laws and reform. -
Paul Penzone Elected
After this years 2016 election, many Latino voters sighed a breath of relief. It was announced that Sheriff Joe Arpaio will be replaced by Paul Penzone. He will become the new sheriff of Maricopa County. Many Latino communities will not have to be in complete fear of Arpaio's immigration raids.
