  • Opium Wars

    Opium Wars
    The Chinese tried to stop the smuggling of opium, but they were easily defeated by the British. In 1842, the Treaty of Nanjing was made but it was very unequal and granted the British a lot of money and Hong Kong.
  • Sepoy Rebellion

    Sepoy Rebellion
    The Sepoys were Indian soldiers who rebelled against the British, but they too were easily defeated by this powerful force within a year. After this Parliament tightened the control of India and ended the East India Company superiority
  • East India Company

    East India Company
    The British East India Company traded in India and it controlled a large part of India, it being the company not the British government. Great Britain considered India the brightest "jewel in the crown".
  • Queen Victoria crowned Empress of India

    Queen Victoria crowned Empress of India
    Queen Victoria was proclaimed Empress of India although it was already under crown control. This title connected the monarchy of England with the empire, boning India to Britain.
  • Berlin Conference

    Berlin Conference
    The scramble for the Europeans to gain African territory. The most influential and well known countries were Belgium, France, Great Britain, Germany and Portugal but there were 14 countries total. The discovery of diamonds on the West African Coast intrigued Europeans and every major power wanted a piece. This meeting was to lay down the rules for division of Africa.

    The Boer War
    The Boers were Dutch farmers who clashed with the British in regards to slaves and land when they came to take over the Cape. They waged the first modern war and the Dutch used guerrilla tactics and commando raids while the British burned down farms and imprisonned innocents. The British won in the end.
  • Boxer Rebellion

    Boxer Rebellion
    This was when peasant set siege on the European section of Beijing for months on end and the Chinese government allowed this to happen. Eventually the European soldiers defeated them.
