    Monroe Doctrine
    The United States along with Latin American countries feared that European countries would try to reconquer the new republics. Because of this fear, President James Monroe issued a doctrine that stated that North American countries were not to be considered for any colonization by Europe.
  • Opium War

    Opium War
    The British started smuggling the drug Opium into China to make large profits. When the Chinese attempted at stopping the drug smuggling, it started the Opium Wars. The Chinese were easily defeated by the British. The wars were eventually concluded witth the Treaty of Nanjing, which was unequal, favoring the British.
  • Seuz Canal is built

    Seuz Canal is built
    The Suez Canal was in high demand at the time. Countries didnt want to waste many days, months, or even years going all the way arounf Africa just to trade. After putting in the canal, this cut all of the ships trips and voyages in half. During the Berlin Conference this area in Egypt was in high demand because of the canal.
  • Sepoy Rebellion

    Sepoy Rebellion
    Sepoys, or Indian Soldiers, rebelled against the British. The British were able to stop the revolt within a year. Because of the Sepoy Rebellion, parliment ultimitaly tightened control of India and ended the East India Co. dominance.
  • Boxer Rebellion

    Boxer Rebellion
    Peasants sent seige on the European section of Beijing for months. European soldiers began to enclose and fight back. The Chnese government not only allowed it but also didnt help or give support to the peasants. European soldiers eventually defeated the peasants.
  • Boer War

    Boer War
    Boers were dutch settlers who did not agree with the British policies regarding land and slaves in South Africa. Because of this disagreement, the Boers held a war with the Britush, although the British won in the long run. The Boer War was the first modern "total" war.
  • Panama Canal is built

    Panama Canal is built
    President Roosevelt wnated to build the Panama Canal to cut the trip from the east coast to west coast of America in half. In order to recieve the land from Panama, Roosevelt halped Panama fight for their independence. In return Panama granted the United States a stretch of land 10 miles wide, to build the canal.
