    Plato and Socrates

    Socrates used the Socratic method
    -he asked his students a series of questions which allows them to draw their own conclusions and determine how what they learn applies to the real world. Plato was a student of Socrates and opened the first school.
    -he said that information is always changing and when we start an idea, we can change it but we cannot kill it.
  • Johann Henreich Pestalozzi

    Head, heart, and hands associated with 4-h originates from pestalozzi.
    He also believed in hands on learning and that thinking lead a man to knowledge.
  • Johan Amos Comenius

    He wanted to prepare students for the real world and believed that all children had the innate love of learning.
    He promoted educational rights for all people and emphasized the important of extracurricular activities.
    He would start students off with the foundations needed to build on what they were learning.
  • Charles Sanders Pierce

    He was educated as a chemist at Harvard and eventually became a professor at John Hopkins university. He believed in the practical application of ideas.
  • John Dewey

    He believed in the importance and value of vocational education. He believed that the curriculum should be relevant to a students lives and that students should learn by doing.
  • Smith and Hughes

    Students weren't learning anything relevant.
    Instead of learning about farm animals, they were learning about exotic animals that they would never see in their life time. This made many students drop out because they believed there was no point in them being in class.
