Births of Amir and Hassan
Amir was born in the winter of 1963, his mother had died concieving him from blood loss. Hassan was born a year later in the winter as well, inside "that little shack". -
Buzkashi Tournament incident
Amir is taken to witness the yearly Buzkashi tournament, an event where horse-back riders attempt to drag a goat to a certain area for points. There, Amir emotionally breaks down at the sight of a trampled chapandaz, humiliating Baba and making him ashamed of Amir.

The Monarchy Falls
A bloodless yet relatively loud coup d'etat lead by Daoud Khan is performed in Afghanistan, ending the rule of Zahir Shah and establishing a republic. -
Encounter with Assef
Amir and Hassan are ambushed by Assef and are forced to listen to his sociopathoc ramblings. Assef decides to pull out his brass knuckles, thus making Hassan go on the defensive, insult Assef, and scare him away. However, Assef then swears revenge for being called one-eyed Assef. -

Life-changing incidents
Throughout the winter of 1975, many events take place. Firstly, Amir and Hassan prepare for the kite fighting contest for many days. Hassan describes to Amir a dream he may or may not have made up, and it sticks to Amir, as he keeps reflecting on it and what it could have meant. Then, the actual kite fighting contest, which Amir wins and is celebrated for it. And finally, the most impactful of them all. Hassan is cornered by Assef in an alley after Hassan successfully captures the kite, [cont.] -

Life Changing incidents [cont.]
and Amir stands by, completely choked in fear and filled with cowardice as he witnesses Hassan get beaten and raped by Assef in the alleyway, engraining the image into Amir's head for a very large portion of his life, as well as affecting it in general. -
Russia invades and occupies Afghanistan
Communist Russian forces invade and enter Afghanistan with little to no initial resistance. Their presence is made known through the slaughter of many afghan civilians. Escape from Afghanistan
Amir and Baba begin to flee from Afghanistan to Peshawar, and from Peshawar to America. The travels are grueling, and Kamal and his father die during it. -
Amir meets Soraya and her family
In the flea market, General Taheri meets Baba and start discussing matters of Afghanistan and each other. In the process, Baba calls over Amir and Taheri to Soraya, and they happen to meet. Thusly, Amir finds the love of his life. -
Amir asks for Soraya's hand
After fighting his pulmonary cancer, Baba was discharged back home, where Amir asks Baba for a facor, it being asking as a formal request to allow Soraya to marry Amir. -
Baba's death.
Baba succumbs to pulmonary cancer, leaving Amir completely alone with the exception of the Taheris and a missing Rahim Khan. This leaves Amir shaken due to how much he loved Baba. -
Taliban rise to power
The Taliban seize control of most of Afghanistan, with the Northern Alliance being their biggest contestors. Taliban insurgents generally terrorizing citizens and outright executing them is common at that point. -
Rahim Khan reappears
Rahim Khan phones Amir's household and contacts him. He tells Amir that there is a "way to be good again", and thus embarks Amir on an adventure to save his illegitimate nephew. -
Revenge and Redemption
After Amir makes a meeting with a Taliban official in a soccer field, he goes to said meeting and trades pleasantries with Assef. Because he's so nice. Really, though, Assef has Sohrab as a sexual slave, and Amir attempts to fight Assef for him. He fails miserably, of course, but Sohrab follows up on his father's promise of making the name One-eyed Assef ring loud and true. Still, Amir gets Sohrab out of there and, at least for now, in one piece. Sohrab, that is, since Amir is busted up. -

The final kite battle
As a final goodbye, Sohrab finally smiles during an improptu kite battle as him and Amir win against an opponent. This is the final character-change.
