    Abraham Lincoln served as the 16th President of the United States of America. He served from March 1861 to April 1865, when he was assassinated. He is very important in the American history because he led them through its Civil War between the North and the South. He strengthened the federal government and modernized the economy. He also played played a major part in ending slavery in America.
  • The Caribou Gold Rush

    The Caribou Gold Rush
    The Cariboo Gold Rush was a gold rush in the Colony of British Columbia. The gold rush took place in the remote, isolated Cariboo Mountains region. People from the Fraser River Gold Rush discovered gold on the Horsefly River. After the news spread of the gold found near bedrock, many gold-seekers were also drawn towards the site. The site was preserved as a heritage site and a tourist attraction.
  • Canada Day

    Canada Day
    The Dominion or the Government of Canada was officially born on this day. This day was named as Dominion Day until 1982. We now call this day Canada Day. This day was to remember the day that Canada became a self governing Dominion. New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Ontario and Quebec joined Confederation on this day.

    Sir John A. Macdonald was elected as the first Prime Minister of Canada. He served for 19 years. In 1864, when no party proved capable of governing Canada, MacDonald agreed to a proposal with his political rival. He was the leading figure in the discussions and conferences which resulted in the British North America Act and the birth of Canada.

    In 1834, the maple leaf was one of the numerous emblems proposed to represent the society. In 1868, the maple leaf slowly caught on as a national symbol and it was included in the coat of arms of Ontario and Quebec.

    Rupert's Land, which was 7 million acres, was purchased by the Canadian Parliament from the Hudson's Bay Company for 1.5 million dollars. It was the largest real estate transaction in Canada's history.

    The Canadian Pacific Railway started to recruit chinese labourers from 1881 to 1884. Over 17,000 workers were recruited. Many workers died while building The Canadian Pacific Railway. Newspaper articles portrayed the Chinese in a degrading way. When the railroad was built, and when the Chinese were no longer needed, the Chinese Immigration Act of 1885 was passed to slow down Chinese Immigration by charging a 50$ head tax upon arrival into Canada.

    Wilbur and Orville Wright completed their first functional, powered aircraft. The invention of the airplane changed the world because a new mode of transportation was created, travel by air. With the airplane, people weren't limited to traveling overseas with the boat. Now people could travel within a country or continent in lesser time than cars.

    In World War 1 Germany, Austria-Hungary, Bulgaria, and the Ottoman Empire fought against Great Britain, France, Russia, Italy, Romania, Japan and the United States. More than 16 million soldiers and civilians alike were dead. The war ignited when the heir to the Austria-Hungary Empire, Archduke Franz Ferdinand, was shot. Britain, France, and the US won the war leaving Germany, Austria-Hungary, and the Ottoman Empire defeated.
