Gandhi Returns to India
Gandhi returns to India after being in South Africa. He shall never return to South Africa. -
Rowlatt Acts
The British passed a law saying that they could arrest people and jail them for up to two years without trial. This angered the Indians, for it was a violation of their rights. -
Amristar Massacre
a large gathering of Indians in one of Amristar's parks leads to the death of nearly 380 Indians. The British gunned down the Indians in fear of a large protest breaking out. The British saw that to handle the large mass of people that greatly outnumbered them was to open fire into a crowd. -
The Civil Disobedience Movement
This movement was led by Gandhi and was intended to lead Indians to disobey the British laws as a form of protest against the ridiculously high salt tax along with other issues. -
The Salt March
Gandhi arrives in Dandi, India (coastal town) after marching 241 miles to go down to the ocean with his conglomeration of supporters who followed him and illegally make salt to protest the British rule. -
The "Quit India Movement"
The Indian congress told the British that they were to immediately "quit" India. The entire top level of the congress was immediately arrested, including Gandhi. Violent protests broke out all accross India and the British were now seeing India as ungovernable. -
Afghanistan Forms
British controlled provinces in India spilt into two separate countries, India and Afghanistan. Afghanistan being a mostly islamic state and India being a mainly hindu state. -
India Gains Independence
On this day, India gains its independence from Britain. India is finally an independant nation again. Jawaharlal Nehru becomes the first prime minister of India.
