    The first School Museum was located in St. Louis and opened in 1905. School Museums showcased instructional materials such as films, slides, stereographs and more.

    The first instructional film catalog was created in 1910. Thomas Edison believed that this would be the end of books in schools. Although there was change, it was not as powerful as predicted due to the cost of materials and teachers resistance to change.

    Audiovisual Instruction Movement and Radio
    In the 1920's there was development of sound technology. This naturally spilled over into instructional media. It was believed by some that radio would greatly impact education. However due to a variety of problems such as teacher resistance and lacking equipment, radio never met its high expectations.

    Televisions impact on education grew during the 1950's. This was due to many television channels being set up specifically for educational purposes as well as major funding being provided for educational television. Television did not impact education as greatly as expected due partially to low quality of the television programs and expenses.
  • Instructional Computers

    Instructional Computers
    Instructional computers made their appearance in the 1950's. By the 1980's interest in using computers for instruction was growing. It was believed that computers would have a sizeable effect on education. Although there was impact. It was not as great as envisioned.

    Currently
    The development of the internet has proved to be a significant tool for education. Social media is yet another outlet for sharing information with a large audience. As technology continues to develop, so will the opportunities for instruction.
