  • Justice Mella Carroll: the first woman to be High Court Judge.

    During her High Court career she delivered a number of important decisions. For instance, she delivered judgements in controversial cases on abortion, bin charging and unmarried mothers. She sat in the Central Criminal Court over the Catherine Nevin murder trial and subsequent retrial because of the jury being overheard in its deliberation. She retired from the courts in November 2005 due to long running illness she would have been entitled to serve until the following year.
  • Northern Ireland resists United Kingdom's Rule

    A large Provisional Irish Republican Army bomb exploded in the London Docklands area, near Canary Wharf, injuring around forty, and marking the end of a 17-month IRA ceasefire
  • Government Re-Election

    The Fianna Fáil-Progressive Democrats coalition is re-elected. It is the first government to be re-elected since 1969
  • Attempted Bombing

    Loyalist Michael Stone, attempts to bomb the NI Assembly on the day nominations for first and deputy first minister are due to be made.
  • Treaty of Lisbon Referendum

    The Irish public voted on whether to ratify or reject the Lisbon Treaty: the result of the Lisbon Treaty vote was 53% voting "No" and 47% voting "Yes".
  • Bomb Threat

    a bomb alert on Dorset Street in Dublin is caused when officials at a Slovakian airport plant explosives on an innocent civilian and allow him to leave the country on Danube Wings Flight V5 8230 in a security test gone wrong
  • Irish trade and Diplomatic Mission

    a very large Irish trade and diplomatic mission travelled to the Persian Gulf region. Over 80 firms sending 100 people on a five-day Enterprise Ireland mission to Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Dubai and Abu Dhabi were led by the Taoiseach, Enda Kenny, accompanied by the Minister for Enterprise, Jobs and Innovation, Richard Bruton
  • Meeting of Rulers- Ireland & U.S.

    the Taoiseach Enda Kenny meets US President Donald Trump at the White House. The two leaders discuss the election in Northern Ireland and the potential issues around the border due to Brexit. Trump also confirms that he will visit Ireland during his term of office
