    Sunnis and Shias

When the Prophet passed away, there was a debate about who should replace him. This lead to a split in Islam, and two major groups were formed: the Sunnis and the Shias. Ninety percent of Muslims worldwide are Sunni and they believe that the first 4 leaders were the true successors to Muhammad. Shias believe that there was only 1 leader named Ali and he was the true successor to Muhammad.
