The Opritchniki is basically a group of men picked mostly from the lower levels of military and society to become Ivans loyal "bodygaurds". they were chacked and if they seemed loyal enough, they were rewarded with land. they were used to complete the sinical plans of Ivan. -

The Opritchniki attacked the city of Novgorod, becuase Ivan believed they were planning to ally with Lithuania. Thousands of innocent people were hanged, drowned or deported. It is said the death toll varies between 15,000 and 60,000 people. -
