    George Brown was a former tory leader who supported confederation. He created his own newspaper "The Globe" in 1844 to support his ideas of reform and confederation.

    In 1845 there was a massive potato famine that killed over a million med, women, and children in Ireland. This cause a huge arrival of people fleeing from Ireland coming to what is currently Canada. The boat ride over was extremely risky and many people died on the boat. When they arrived they were not excepted. They created Cabbagetown which was known as a very poor area.

    The Battle of Ridgeway
    The Fenians were a group of Irish-Americans organized in New York in 1859 to oppose the British presence Ireland. They began a series of raids on Canadian territory's in hope od diverting British troops from the homeland. The most serious of these were the Battle of Ridgeway. This was Canada's first battle fought exclusively by Canadian soldiers and led entirely by Canadian officers. This caused a special urgency to the Confederation movement.

    ConfederationAt first the people of New Brunswick were against the idea of confederation because they felt they were being sold. In the end they joined confederation. Canada West and George Brown were very for confederation and they joined without hesistation. Canada East thought at first that their French society would be ostrasized but they agreed to joinconfederation. Nova Scotia some people didn't like the idea of confederation but in the end they became one of the four original colonies.
