  • Japan goes to war with China

    Due to Japan’s better equipped forces, Japan wins the war with China after just 9 months.
  • Pearl Harbor attack

    Pearl Harbor attack
    Japan launches a surprise attack on the US Pacific fleet at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Twelve ships are sunk, with a further 9 damaged; nearly 2,500 people are killed. The US and its main allies declare war on Japan the following day.

    The United States intensely fire-bombed 67 Japanese cities for six months before the bombings. In two to four months after the bombing 90,000-166,000 people died in Hiroshima. 60% of the people that died deaths were due to flash/flame burns, 30% from falling debris, and 10% from other causes such as radiation sickness. In both cities more than 80% of those who died were civilians.

    In the first two to four months 60,000-80,000 people died in Nagasaki. Roughly 50% of the deaths occurred on the first day. The causes of short term death: 15-20% from radiation sickness, 20-30% from flash burns, and 50-60% from other injuries. In both cities more than 80% of those who died were civilians.
