    Douglas is neglected by his parents who can't stand his collicky behavior. He is always crying and rather than trying to help or calm him his parents ignore him and leave him in his crib in another room all day long. Due to the harsh way Douglas' parents treated him he most likely will not have confidence in the world around him or in his own abilities to influence events. This takes place in Erikson's first stage which is Trust vs Mistrust. In this stage the virtue of hope is developed.

    Douglas does not have the same level of peer-to-peer interaction as other students in his kindergarten class. He feels like a nuisance to others and as a result has melt downs in school and is unable to develop propper interpersonal skills. This happens during Erikson's Third Stage, Initiative vs. Guilt, when children are unable to act socially positively.

    Douglass is diagnosed with clinical depression at the age of 27. He is unable to create and maintain healthy relationships with the people aorund him and it has lead to his feelings of isolation and lonliness. Fearing commitment and relationships can lead to a negative result in Erickson's Sixth Stage, Intimacy Vs. Isolation.

    Erikson's Eighth stage is based on looking back on your life and contemplating our accomplishments or regreting our failures.
    Douglas' depression increases greater still as he looks back on his life and realizes that he has not accomplished anything remarkable. He is 72 years old and has never married, has no children, works a low end job, and hates his life. So he decided to end it.
