30% of 756 convicts that arrived in N.S.W were catholic. In 1788 governor Phillip made an order that every convict and settlers had to attend at Anglican Sunday church services, if you didn't attend you would get flogged. Most Irish had no interest in catholic faith or religion. Some of the convicts burnt down the Anglian church but Governor Phillip would not miss one mass. The only way the Catholics could keep up their faith was to say the traditional prayer the rosary.
