    Dewey Received his Doctorate from John Hopkins University in 1884 and began teaching at the University of Michigan
  • Experimental Elementary School

    Dewey starts an experimental elementary school. At this school, he tries to bring about education reform. His belief was that education should be based on interaction. He would resign early from the school due to his wife being let go.
  • University of Chicago

    In 1894, Dewey transferred to the University of Chicago to continue teaching
  • Pragmatism

    Dewey created the concept of pragmatism to explain the way people approach problems. Pragmatism is the approach of one's problems in a practical way. This being different from using theories and principles that don't typically fit the norm. The most interesting part of this theory is that it taps into one's common sense. The suggestion that practical thinking was the appropriate approach to one's problems as opposed to idealism.
