    Jowale Zollar was 6 when she started her dance education. Her instructor was Joseph Stevenson a student of Katherine Dunham. Zollar's early training included Afro- Cuban and native dance.

    After finishing her Master in Fine Arts at Florida State, she moved to New York City, studied under Dianna McIntyre, Artistic director of the Sounds in Motion Dance Company.

    In 1984, Jowale left the dance company to start her own. The Urban Bush Women was the first all African American women dance company.
