In 1933, "Zahir Shah began his forty-year reign of Afghanistan" (Hosseini 24). King Zahir's reign is characterized as a time where racism was started towards Hazara's. This racism that started in the 30's is still around today making this event extremely significant.
  • Hassan's birth

  • Hassan's birth

Hassan was born,"in that small shack...one cold winter day in 1964." (Hosseini 5). This event is significant because he was born in the shack outside Amir's house. This shows how Hassan lived with Amir and how they were almost brothers growing up together.
  • Baba builds a an orphanage

When Amir was either 5 or 6, "In the late 1960's...Baba decided to build an orphanage." (Hosseini 10). Baba was praised over and over again for building that orphanage, which alway outshone Amir. After this event, Amir always felt like he couldn't get his father's approval.
  • Baba takes a break from construction

Baba being a man who enjoys soccer, " signed me up for soccer teams to stir the same passion in me. But I was pathetic, a blundering liability to my own team...Baba sensed my lack of genuine interest and resigned himself to the bleak act that his son was never going to either play or watch soccer." (Hosseini 15). This was very upsetting to Baba, which causes Baba to treat Amir differently, in the sense that Amir got the feeling he would never get his fathers respect nor approval.
  • Amir tricks Hassan

Amir goes completely off text, "One day in 1973, I played another little trick on Hassan. I was reading from the book...but I had abandoned the text altogether" (Hosseini 23). This shows how littl Amir thinks of Hassan and how he treats Hassan which gives us an insight into the mind of Amir.
  • Hassans lip surgery

For Hassans birthday he got a surgery which,"went well. We were a little shockes when they first removed the bandage...because Hassans upper lip was a grotesque mes of swollen, raw tissue. (Hosseini 38). This connects to when Amir is hurt thinking about,"that day in 1974, in the hospital room, just after Hassan's harelip surgery...Now everyone in that room was either daed or dying. Except me. This gets Hassan thinking about how he is all alone. This impacts his decision to adopt Sohrab

  • Amir and Baba in America

Hassan likes America stating, "For me, America was a place to bury my memories. For Baba a place to mourn his." (Hosseini 108). This is just one sign of the effect of Amir's unatoned sins. Baba missed his home but he knows he needed to move for Amir to have a better life even though he h hated it.
  • Rahim Khan goes to Hazarajat to find Hassan

Rahim Khan reconnected with Hassan in 1986,"There were a lot of reasons why I went to Hazarajat to find in 1986. The biggest one, Allah forgive me, was that I was lonely." (Hosseini 175). Rahim Khan reconnecting with Hassan is possibly the best thing that could have happened to Hassan. Amir needed Rahim Khan to get to Hassan and consequently Sohrab.

Even More.' " (Hosseini 180). Seeing Snauabar for the first time Hassan can remember is special for Hassan. This goes back to the central message of atonement in The Kite Runner. In this instance, Sanaubar is atoning for not being there for Hassan.

If you went from Shar-e-Nau section to Kerteh-Parwan to buy a carpet, you risked getting shot..or getting blown up by a rocket..." (Hosseini 171). This shows the struggle in Afghanistan in the 90's. The suffering that Afghanistan is in makes Amir realize how lucky he was to be able to escape.
