Amir's Mom dies giving birth
Amir has always had a piece of him missing, his mom. Years progressed with Amir having no mother. The day Hassan was born was, "Just one year after my mom died giving birth to me" (Hosseini 6). In the story, Amir is strictly focused on fulfilling the wants his father. Sadly, he has no one to lean on during times when Baba disliked him. Amir being mother-less, leaves him without a shoulder to lean on and enforces him to grow up really quick as he was missing a "care taker". -
Hassan is Born
One day in Afghanistan it was, "in that little shack, that Hassan was born in the winter of 1964" (Hosseini 6). Hassan being born enforces the entire plot of the story. He became Amir's best friend, who stuck up for him in many tough situations. Without Hassan the story would have lost much of its meaning. Hassan poetry the message of being a truly genuine and loyal friend. -

Amir wins the kite contest
As Amir won he, "didn't need to hear the crowd's roar to know. I didn't need to see either. Hassan was screaming" (Hosseini 66). Amir winning the all famous kite contest ensured a relationship with Baba in the future. Before the kite contest, Baba never felt pride in his son. Finally, after winning this contest Baba found a new appreciation in Amir and they began to form a bond to last a lifetime. -
Hassan is Raped
After Amirs big win Assef took out his anger on Hassan as he, "knelt behind Hassan, put his hands on Hassan's hips and lifted his bare buttocks. He kept one hand on Hassan's back and undid his own belt buckle with his free hand. He unzipped his jeans. Dropped his underwear. He positioned hisself behind Hassan" (Hosseini 75). Hassan was harassed in order to do good for Amir. It shows how loyal of a person Hassan is. As well as, how Amir think he is greater than Hassan and won't stick up for him. -
Amir's Birthday Party
Amir finally gained a love from Baba. In Baba new found love for Amir, he threw Amir a birthday party. But as the guest rolled in Amir, "realized they were really coming for me. It was my birthday, but I knew who the real star of the show was" (Hosseini 94). Baba wanted to show off and that is why he threw this extravagant birthday party for Amir. He invited everyone on his guest list rather than giving Amir any say. -
Hassan and Ali Leave
Hassan and Ali could no longer trust Amir as he did not stuck up for Hassan when he being raped. As Hassan left in his car Amir wanted to, "pull Hassan out of the backseat and him I was sorry, so sorry" (Hosseini 109). Amir at first wanted Hassan to leave. When Ali announced they were leaving, Amir ended up being devastated. Amir realized Hassan meant so much to him, and was like family. -
Soviet Army Invasion
During the soviet intervention of December 1975 the, "Soviet Army invades and props up communist government," (bbc.com). -
Off to San Francisco!
Amir and Baba moved to San Francisco as, "Baba loved the idea of America" (Hosseini 125). The two boys moved to America in seek of a new lifestyle. They had left there millionaire behind, coming to America left Baba working at a gas station. Although they had to make these sacrifices, moving to America was worth it for the memories yet to come. -
Amir Graduates from High School
In America Amir was finally able to go through with his education. Amir, "graduated from high school at the age of twenty, by far the oldest senior tossing his mortarboard on the football field that day" (Hosseini 131). Now that Amir completed his goal of education he was able to begin to explore the outside world. Although he was the oldest to graduate, it did not matter. as he finally got what he deserved. -
Amir Meets Soraya
Amir saw a glimpse of what he has always wanted as, "she walked to a dull gray van two aisles away and put the thermos inside. her hair spilled to one side" (Hosseini 141). This was Amirs first time seeing his future. Some may call it, love at first sight. -
Ali Dies
When Amir goes to visit Rahim Khan, Rahim tells him about some events that have happened when he was in America. One devastating thing to hear was how, "Ali and his cousin -- who had owned the house -- had been killed by a landmine" (206). Amir had grown up with Ali. Ali had always cared for him. Now this leaves Amir without his two biggest father figures, Baba and Ali. Sadly, Rahim begins to reveal how more and more family members are dying. -
Amir marries Soraya
Finally after the times of Amir dreaming of what him and Soraya could be, "we said our oaths' (Hosseini 170). The two were married. After loosing all of his relatives, this gave Amir a shoulder to lean on and someone to trust. This brings both Soraya and Amir joy for the rest of our there lives. -
Peace Treaty
At the end of the soviet intervention the, "Afghanistan, USSR, the US and Pakistan sign peace accords and Soviet Union begins pulling out troops," (bbc.com). -
Finally Army Exit
This time brought much commotion to Afghanistan and Army Troops were leaving the, "Last Soviet troops leave, but civil war continues as mujahideen push to overthrow Najibullah." (bbc.com). -
Amir and Soraya Try to Have a Family
Amir and Soraya began to try to have kids. Sadly as they tried nothing would happen, but Amir still had the dream of, "being just like Baba" (Hosseini 184). Something the two had always dreamed of is being parents. Children bring them both joy, and eventually brings them to adopting Sohrab. -
Sanaubar Dies
Sohrab adored his grandmother she, "lived to see him turn four, and then one morning, she just did not wake up" (Hosseini 211). Sanuabar became a wonderful grandmother to Sohrab, to make up for all the time she missed being a mother to Hassan. Her death left both Hassan and Sohrab heartbroken. It took Sohrab a long time to cope with this extreme pain. -
Hassan and Fazana Die
Now that Sanuabar had died all Sohrab had to hold on to was his mom and dad, little did he know they would soon be gone too. As Hassan was protesting the Taliban, "shot him in the back of the head. Farzana came screaming and attacked them. Shot her too" (Hosseini 219). Now Sohrab was left with no grandparents or parents. He was sent to an orphanage, where he was not given the proper care he needed. He became depressed and Amir came to save the day. -
US Leads Invasion
As time went on the US began to take part in the invasions, "US-led bombing of Afghanistan begins following the September 11 attacks on the United States. Anti-Taliban Northern Alliance forces enter Kabul shortly afterwards," (bbc.com). -
Sohrab flys kite with Amir
Amir had rescued Sohrab from the orphanage. After a harsh battle with Assef and difficulty getting Sohrab a visa to come to the US, they got here. Sohrab missed his old life, and did not talk very much. On Afghan New Year Sohrab gave a, "smile, nothing more. It didn't make everything all right. It didn't make anything all right...But I'll take it. With Open Arms" (Hosseini 371). Finally Sohrab began to regain his comfort with Amir. They wanted Sohrab to be happy, they are starting to get close. -
End of the US Led Invasions
After many US led invasions, Afghanistan begins to take control as, "Nato takes control of security in Kabul, its first-ever operational commitment outside Europe," (bbc.com). -
Afghanistan Elects
Afghanistan decides to a adopt a new system of order, "Loya Jirga adopts new constitution which provides for strong presidency," (bbc.com). -
First Parliamentary Votes
For the first time in a while, finally "Parliament opens with warlords and strongmen in most of the seats" (bbc.com). -
Securing Afganistan
The country wanted to take control and protect themselves, "Nato assumes responsibility for security across the whole of Afghanistan, taking command in the east from a US-led coalition force," (bbc.com). -
Suicide Bomb
There has been much violence in Afghanistan. The Afghans were in trouble as a, "Suicide bomb attack on Indian embassy in Kabul kills more than 50" (bbc.com). -
Devastating Earthquake
Another devastating event hits Afghanistan. This on is more recent. Unfortunately A, " Powerful earthquake kills more than 80 people in northeast of country" (bbc.com).
