Kite Runner & the History of Afghanistan

    In the kite Runner it says," Inside sat framed family pictures: an lod, grainy photo of my granfather and King Nadir Shah taken in 1931." (5) Amir is taking about an old photgraph. This photo is of his grandfather.
  • Baba Born

    The Kite Runner says, " In 1933, the year Baba was born..."(24) This is year when Baba was born. This an important year because Baba is an important character.
  • Amir's Mom dies

    In the Kite Runner, it says,"...in the winter of 1964, just one year after my mother died giving birth to me." Amir's mom gives birth and dies. Only a year before Hassan is born.
  • Hassan Born

    in the Kite Runner it says, "It was there, in the little shack, Hassan was born in the winter of 1964..." (6) Hassan was born in a little shack. This was in the winter of 1964.
  • Amir Plays Trick

    In the Kite Runner it says, " One day, in uly 1973 I played another little trick on Hassan."(30) This is the day when Amir learns his gift of writing by tricking Hassan. This is very important.
  • MOnarchy over Amir

    In the book it says,"...that night of July 17, 1973 Kabul awoke the next morning to find that the monarchy was a thing of the past.''(36) The monarchy government was over in Kabul that day. This changed everyone's lives.
  • Baba pays for procedure of Hassan's lip

    Th doctor said, "my job is to fix things on people's bodies, sometimes their faces"(Hosseini, 45). This that Baba cares for Hassan. It also hints that he knew they were related.
  • 1974

    In the Kite Runner, it says, "Early that following winter of 1974, Hassan and I were playing in the yardone day..."(44) Hosseini is writing about the winter before 1975. This was a good memory.
  • Winter Of 1975

    In the Kite Runner it says, "In the winter of 1975, I saw Hassan run a kite for the last time."(55) Hosseini is describing the winter when Hassan was violated. This plot point is important.
  • Amir changed

    The Kite Runner says, "I became what I am today at the age of twelve, on a friged ovvercast day in the winter of 1975."(1) This quote is saying that this winter changed Amir forever. This winter is when his personality evolved.
  • Amir Coup

    The Kite Runner says, "...the official end, would come first in April 1978 with the communist coup..."(36) The end of Amir's way of life would come on this day with the coup of Afganistan. The people rebeled against the government.
  • Winter

    Hosseini wrote, "I thought of the life i once had until the winter of 1975 came along and changed everything. "(2) Hosseini is looking back at the life he once led before that terrible winter. The winter changed his life.
  • The Soviet Union Invades Afghanistan

    In the New York Times, they say that, "Afghanistan, officially the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, has known little peace since 1970, when the Soviet Union invaded."(1)
  • Russians come to Kabul

    In the Kite Runner it says,"December 1979, when Russian tanks would roll into the very same streets where Hassan and I played..."(36) THis is the day when the soviets invaded Kabul They destroyed Amir's home.
  • The Magnificant 7

    In the Kite Runner it says, "One day, maybe around 1983 or 1984 I was at a video store in Fremont...When a guy next to me asked if I had seen The Magnificant 7." Amir learns etticate on this day. He proves that he is a true american now.

    In the New York Times, it is written that, "After 1986, the Soviet Air Force was also rendered largly useless by advanced Stinger antiaircraft missiles supplied by the United States to the rebels."(2)
  • Soviets Leave Afghanistan

    The New York Times wrote, "Eventually, after peace talks with the UnitedStates, the last Soviet troops left Afganistan on Febuary 1989, in what was in effect a unilateeral weithdrawal."(2)
  • Amir

    In 1989 Amir's book was released, thus making him, "a minor celebrity in the Afghan community."(183). It is nice for Amir to have some success after all the hardship he has been through. Soon he will become even more successful.

    In the New York Times it says, "As earlyas 1994, Pakistani intelligence officers began funneling arms, money and supplies to Mullah's men."(3)
  • Afghanistan turns into a anarchicary

    The New York Times said, " After Soviet forces departed, Afghanistan descended into vicious internecine strife; by the summer of 1994, power was anarchically divided amung competing warlords and individual fiefdoms."(2)
  • Mullah Omar gains support

    IN the New York Times a writer wrote, " By the end of 1994 Mullah Omar had nearly 12000 followers and was rolling up the warlords to the north and east."(2)
  • The Taliban takes control of Afgan

    In the New York Times the author said, "Buoyed by Pakistani aid, the taliban by 1996 had taken controll of Afghanistan, imposing strict enforcement of fundemental Islamic laws"(3)
  • Bin Laden arrives in Jaalabad

    In the New Yoprk Times it says, "The taliban also provided a haven for Bin Laden, who arrived by charactered jet at Jalalabad Airport on May1996, and for Al Qaeda."(3)

    In the New York Times, it says, " the attack on the World Trade center in New York on Sept. 11, 2001." (3)
  • Hamid Karzai named chairman

    In the New York Times they say, "In December 2001, Hamid Karzai, a supporter and relitive of Mohamad Zahir Shah...was named chairman of an interim government that replaced and defeated the Taliban." (3)
