On page one of the artcile it talks about Afghanistan's violent past,"Afghanistan, offically the islamic Republic of Afghanistan, has known little peace scince 1979, when the Soviet Union invaded"(1). -
Russia invades
The New York Times article Titled Afganistan states that "The first soviet troops parachuted into kabul in Dec. 27, 1979....."(2). -
Hassan gets raped
In THE KITE RUNNER, it describes the violent action that Assef does to Hassan in an allyway,"Assef knelt behind Hassan, put his hands on Hassan's hips and lifted his bare buttocks"(75). In this quote Assef gains a lot of power after this event and becomes feared by Hassan and Amir. This event also ruins Hassan and Amir's relationship forever. -
Amir and Hassan winning the kite conest
Khaled Hosseini describes the joy that Hassan and Amir experience when they win the kite contest,"Hassan was screaming and his arm was wrapped around my neck"(66). This quote shows how happy they both are to win something so honorable in thier society. After this event Amir and Baba become much closer to each other. -
Amir asks for new servants
After Hassan gets raped, Amir wants to get rid of him so his guilt from watching Hassan get raped will disapear, so he says" 'Baba, have you ever thought about getting new servants"(88). Amir wants to get rid of Hassan, but Baba doesn't agree and gets really mad at Amir. This ruins Amir and Baba's realtionship and Amir is now stuck with Hassan and all of his giult. -
Amir's birthday
Assef is invited to Amir's birthday and he shows his dominance by,"...kneading Hassan in the chest with a knuckle"(100). Baba invited all of the Guests and he like Assef and he doesn't know how evil he really is. Amir has no power anymore becuae he can't even stop Assef in his own home. -
Hassan leaving baba's house
Shortly after Amir's party, Hassan is accused of stealing Amir's presents and he and his father decide to leave Baba's house," ' We are leaving, Agha sahib' "(106). Hassan leaves not becuase he was accused of stealing but because he knew Amir watched him get raped. Amir knows that and he carries this guilt with him for a long time. -
US giving supplies to the rebels to fight the soviets
On the second page of the article, it says that "After 1986, teh soviet Air Force was also rendered useless by advanced stinger antiaircraft missles supplied by the US to the rebels"(2). -
Amir and Baba move to America
Baba and Amir both like the idea of moving to America to start thier new lives,"Baba loved the idea of America"(125). This quote shows the love for America baba has and how it is different to his old life. He is not as privilaged as he once was but he lives in a better area, so Amir can grow up in a more modern society. -
Amir is interested in Soraya
At this piont in THE KITE RUNNER Amir is old enough to get married and is interested in a girl named Soraya. "Lying awake in bed at night, i thought of Soraya Taheri's...."(142). This shows that is now a man, who is ready to be in a serious relationship. Also, America has given Amir a lot of new oppartunities, like meeting the girl of his dreams -
baba gets cancer
Amir brings Baba into the doctor's becuse baba has been feeling very bad lately and the doctor brings some bad news," 'Cancer?' Baba added casually. 'possible. it's suspicious, anyway..."(154). Baba hadn't been feelig good and Amir was suspicious. Baba doesn't seem to care that mcuh, but on the other side, Amir is very worried for Baba. This shows the personality differences between the two. -
Amir and soraya get married
Amir asks Baba to Ask the general for Sorata's hand in marrige and Amir gets the answer he wants" 'Well?' 'the general accepted'"(162). This is a big moment for Amir becuase he is now a man and has bceome much more mature. Now Baba can hand over his "power" to Amir scince Baba is close to his death. -
Baba Dies
When Baba dies Amir is shocked and i very sad adnd doesn't know what to do without baba. "Baba couldn't show me the way anymore; i'd have to find it own my own"(174). now without Baba Amir needs to do things by himslef, whcich he hasn't done before. but Amir is old enought to find is own way, with the help of his wife. -
Hassan get killed
Rahim Kahn met with Hassan a coupe years back and he tells his experience with him, and how Hassan died. " '- and shot him in the back of the head' "(218). When Amir gets told this he is in total shock and didn't believe it. He realizes that he can never fully atone for his sins. -
Amir is going to adopt Sohrab
Rahim Kham wants amir to bring Sohrab back to him and Amir so he can have a good childhood, " 'I want you to go to Kabul. I want you to bring Sohrab here' "(220). -
Amir fights Assef
Amir soon finds out that Assef, who is now part of the Taliban, took Shorab, and He and Amir fight over Soharb, "I don't know if i gave Assef a good fight. I don't think i did"(288). Even tought Amir didn't win the fight he and Sohrab escape. In this situation Amir atone's for his sins by protecting and taking in Sohrab. -
Amir visits Rahim Kahn
Amir Hasn't seem Rahim in a long time and is surprised to see how he changed, "Then a thing made of skin and bones pretending to be Rahim Khan opened them door"(197). Amir is surprised to see Rahim like this becuae of how whealthy he once was. But it brings back good and bad memroies from his childhood. -
russia leaves Afganistan
The New York Times says that "After Soviet forces departed, Afganistan descended into vicious internecine strife...."(2). -
september eleventh
The new York times also mentions 911 and says"After the attack on the World Trade Center in New York on Sept. 11, 2001....."(3). -
Hamid karzai
This article also mentions hamid karzai, who was a former king of Afganistan, "Mr. Karzai was elected to a 5 year term as president in 2004 -
General patraeus
The New York Times also talks about General David Patraeus, who was involved in Afganistan"... The Iraq commander who recieved mcuh of the credit for the sucees of the surge there..."(4). -
obama's plan
The Times also talks about president Obama's speech at westpiont "... Mr. obama announced his plan to deploy 30,000 additional troops"(4). -
Troops withdrawing
The Times talks about the plans by the president to withdraw troops,"Though initial plans called for american combat forces of his administation, withdrawing troops from afghanistan in the summer of 2011'(1). -
obama's new plan
The New York TImes explains obama's new plans for the military "Yet in a move away from that juy 2011 deadline, the Obama administration changed its tone to inceasingly emphazie the idea that the United States will have forces in the country until at least the end of 2014"(4). -
