Assasination of Abarham Lincoln
Washington D.C., at Fords theatre actor John Wilkes Booth shot Abarham Lincoln. John escaped the scene jumping out of the back door, while a doctor examined President Lincoln. He was rushed to the Petersen Boarding House where he died the next morning. -
Passage of the 15th Amendment
At the time of 1868 it was a stuggle to reconstruct a nation" torn by war" They believed that voiting rights for freed blacks was a huge problem then not all states allowed it thought. So the writers for this ammendment created 3 attatchements, 1. Prohibit states from denying the law, 2. Prevents states from denying the vote to anyone, 3. All male citizens over 21 had the right to vote. Congress passed the full version Fweb 26, 1869. -
Tuskegee Institute Founded
In 1881 Booker T Washington was a teacher than, Arrived in Tuskegee Alabama and was asked to start a school for blacks. " On July 4th, 1881 Washington officially opened Tuskegee with what he described as 30 "anxious and earnest students," -
Jane Addams founds Hull House
1889 Jane and her friend Ellen Gates rented a mansion that once belonged to Charles Hull. One the intentions of the Hull house was to bring hope into immigrants lifes. The Hull house provided, Day care, Kindergarten, Boys club, and later a coffee shop for adultst o socialize. -
Sherman Anti-Trust Act passed
This was the first United States federal statue that limited cartels and monopolies. The government had a responsiblity to punish any company that violates the laws. -
Supreme Cour Decision: Plessy v. Ferguson
Homer Plessy a man mixed with white and black with a white image, purchased a first class ticket and sat in a white only car, he was put in court for breaking a Louisiana law passed in 1890 "providing for separate railway carriages for the white and colored races." John Ferguson argued that the segregation law violated the 14th amendment. In the end,the case gave a "constitutional nod" to racial segregation in public places". -
Spanish American War
The Spanish American war of 1898 was proceeded by 3 years of Cubans trying to gain independence from spain. This caught the eye of America. and Ambassdor from Spain sent an offensive letter pushing America and Spain into war even more. NAACP Founded
"The NAACP was formed partly in response to the continuing horrific practice of lynching and the 1908 race riot in Springfield." The group was filled with white liberals discussing the worngs racists treated the blacks. Their goal was to secure the rights of the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendment. -
Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire
March 25, 1911 In NewYork 145 workers were burnt and killed. The lack of saftey in the shops brought new laws for the dangerous conditions in sweat shop factories. -
U.S. declares war on Germany
On April 1st 1917 President Woodrow Wilson declares war on Germany. Resoning because of Germany destroying a U.S. ship without notice, to try to get Mexico to rebel against the U.S. However U.S. came to war at the end of WW1.
