    In 1807 Napoleon invaded Portugal, John VI took refuge in Brazil and in 1815 John VI promoted a legal reform - Brazil: the territorial base of the
    "Empire of Brazil, Portugal and the Algarve".
    In 1821 Juan VI returned to Portugal, leaving his son Pedro de Braganza as governor of Brazil, and in 1822 he proclaimed himself
    emperor of Brazil.
    In 1831 he abdicated and was succeeded by his son, Pedro II.
    In 1889 Portugal recognized its independence.

    In 1919 On the other side of the Andes, in the battle of Pantano de Vargas, the independence of the new Granada was sealed.

    In 1898 the United States declared war on Spain and in 1899 Cuba proclaimed its independence.

    The rebellion is crushed in no time.
    Puerto Rico continues within the Spanish system until the war between the United States and Spain.
    Puerto Rico is still administered by the United States and is currently a commonwealth of that country.
    Consequently, it is not an independent country.
